Religion makes you feel like you are significant. You are not. No one, no thing, no anybody cares what you do on your day-to-day basis, or your entire life. That is a sad and emptying fact that people do not want to believe. Religion makes them not have to realize or believe this.

Endorsing atheism is a double-edged sword when you consider the volatile state of the human psyche when swayed by group mentality. Despite the many conflicts religion has caused, it has also done great good in establishing moral incentive to proliferate the human race.

Without some idea of an afterlife humans are then faced with zero incentive to act in a morally justifiable way. Basically if Hitler and Mother Teresa end up in the same place, why should we limit our responses to violent deviant urges? Society would have nothing to structure around.

Religion is the backbone for law and order, and as science becomes more concrete in it's explanations of how our being came to be people will see the logic in it. To be honest, it takes a bit of faith to be an atheist given science is still slowly becoming unrestricted by outside oppressing forces in society.

I'm sorry?  I was in no way trying to demean what happened in the Holocaust as I completely sympathize with those who had to go through such terrors.  But I do think that people need to stop blaming God for these events happening when God gave man a chance but man slapped Him in the face and said I know what is best for me and will do that.

I'll say it again, this is just what I believe, I perfectly respect your beliefs, and don't expect you to change them in this discussion.

To the religious people, I pose a question. If I live my life with excellent morals: am always kind to other people, care for my family, give back to the community, donate my time/money/etc to help other humans who are in unfortunate situations, and try to help mankind for the short time I am alive, BUT I don't believe in God, what is wrong with that? Why will your religion scorn me for not believing in your God?

this is a somewhat skewed analogy but
imagine space/time as a super huge trampoline.
heavy things make their part of the trampoline sag more right?

if you rolled a marble towards the big heavy ball in the middle, the sag in the trampoline alters the path of the ball to roll around the big object. this is occurs to absolutely everything, even light. this is gravity.
usually objects either collide or whizz by each other, light bends towards the object, reflects, and continues on it's merry way.

a singularity is an object so dense that it's gravitational pull is so powerful that light can't escape. it is pulled in towards the singularity aka black hole and falls into a deep, deep well in space time. black holes 'invisible' because there is no light within the event horizon (the edge of it's gravity)

E=mc^2 shows that mass can be converted into energy and vice versa in a singularity this no longer applies, no laws apply. time stops, matter is obliterated.

Technically there is nothing wrong with that.

But I'm assuming the question you are really asking is why you wouldn't go to heaven by living such a life?  If this is the question then here is the answer.  I stated earlier that man is separated from God because we chose to sin (Adam and Eve sinning against God in the Garden of Eden, this is when sin entered the world).  Because we are separated from God there is nothing we can do on our own that will get us to God again.  Think of this separation as a giant gulf that men are trying to leap across.  The ones that do a ton of 'good stuff' are able to make a bigger leap, but ultimately no one can leap across this gulf and reach God.  However, God loved us, so He sent His Son, Jesus to earth in the form of man (while still being fully God) to live a perfect life and die on the cross and rise again to conquer sin.  Going back to the gulf picture, Jesus' death/resurrection bridged that gulf.  All that man has to do now is accept this free gift of Jesus which removes our sins (because God looks at Jesus' death on the cross as the perfect sacrifice for sins) and they can walk across this bridge to God (and therefore heaven).

furthermore, when matter and anti matter collide, they obliterate each other in a release of energy. it is theorized that in the early stages of our expanding universe that such reactions were happening on a large scale which would explain the uneven consistency of our universe as well as the enormous amount of emptiness separating things. one of the many methods with which we can observe black holes is the synthesis of matter/antimatter pairs at the edge of the event horizon of a black hole. in normal space, these pairs seldom last long enough to be observed before colliding. at the edge of a black hole however, sometimes one of the two will fall into the event horizon and the other particle will float off into space forever alone. we can detect these occurances as gamma radiation although im not 100% on that bit.

I'm glad you chose to do this, it will, if nothing else, help you understand Christianity (and Judaism) more.  If you want a better idea of Jesus and Christianity, I would recommend you not start in the Old Testament, but actually in the New Testament (maybe the gospel of John).  As far as your question, I think this article does a good job (sorry, it is kinda long):

we by absolutely no means know most of the unexplainable. at the subatomic level things still seem to be a shit show. and the origins of life still baffle biologists.

being religious doesn't have to reject logic, physics, or facts. and although it may seem obsolete to you, it doesn't to over a billion other people. it does a lot of good for a lot of people, unfortunately its those who put a negative spin on religion that get all the attention.

I always wondered why people were so comfortable saying this. 100 years ago someone could have said the same thing about genetics, the solar system, any number of answers that science has provided. Why can't science prove or disprove god? In my opinion it is only a matter of time.

Believe in what you want, but just know that if you believe in anything ever written in a religious text you are wrong.

Why do people care? It doesn't effect you. It's a lifestyle people choose to live, it is not forced down your throat (although you may like that Arabian.)

I completely understand that the bible and religion teaches people morals and ethics on appropriate behavior. That's a very good part about it. However the ignorance of most religious people who completely ignore facts, logic, and physics and totally dismiss their counter-argument to their own beliefs because they don't even think the methods used exist pisses me off.

because of what my definition of what god is. to me, god is simply a higher intelligence, a force with a conscience if you will. you can show how all of the laws of physics work, but once you do you are left to wonder, is this just how things happen? do things just randomly operate this way? to many that is an acceptable answer. to me, i just think there is some kind of intelligence to it, a soul to it all. how would science disprove that? and the more i learn about the chaotic behavior at the subatomic level, (which i admit i know very little about) and the complexities of dna, the more i believe in god. however i respect atheists for believing otherwise because it is perfectly reasonable to believe that it just happens that way. thank you for posing your question respectfully.

haha but your last sentence is one of the most hypocritical things i have ever read. "believe what you want, but know that your wrong." lol

sorry for posting so much in this thread, but i'm trying to give a level headed defense of religion and its hard to do. but no, physicists don't fully understand quantum mechanics in that they cannot predict quantum behavior. we can predict the behavior of objects on a larger scale, but not yet at the subatomic level.

and i understand how frustrating the strictly religious and ignorant can be. as a theist its disgusting to watch people burry their heads in the sand when they could be learning, because it won't necessarily lead them away from faith. but this is the extremely vocal (and obnoxious) minority. most people in any given church don't take everything in the bible literally. and most of them will have the same educational level as the atheists in the area.

Not really, the Theory of Evolution by Means of Natural Selection is accepted in the scientific community as the current origin story of life on earth. The public, however, is still unconvinced to a large degree. Personally, I feel that all the evidence for evolution is there. If you look at the research and learn the true mechanics to the theory, it all makes perfect sense.

Funny you should say that 'none of the fairy tale shit in the Bible is real,' because whether your a Christian/Jew/Atheist/Muslim there are facts in the Bible.  Everyone needs to stop making this massive generalization, because there are plenty of things in the Bible that are true and data upon data to support them.

Plus, there are still a lot of things in science that has not been proven to the fullest extent.  For instance, the Big Bang theory.  There's a reason it is still called a theory, science is still trying to prove it.  That's the whole point of science, to prove things, if everything has been proven to the fullest extent than there is no reason to have science.

Gravity is a theory, correct? yes. If something is a scientific theory, it means that a hypothesis has been proven to the point that it is excepted my the majority of scientists, and society, interested in the subject. There is no scientist who doubts gravity. And its the sam ewith the Big Bang "theory"
