ok, laptop question... I am getting a macbook to edit with and use for school. I will be mostly using it for editing with photoshop, premier, and a little bit of aftereffects. I have an old 27 inch iMac I would like to use as a monitor for editing as well. I believe this is possible but I have not researched it thoroughly so screen size should not really be an issue. Right now I am looking at this one:
Specs:

8GB (2 x 4GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM
750GB Serial ATA @ 5400 rpm
Intel HD Graphics 4000
2.9GHz Dual-core Intel i7

for $1269

  • I will be putting my footage on external drives so hard drive space will not be an issue.
  • So, oh media and artsy people, which one of these will give me the best bang for my buck? Which one will allow me to edit the quickest and not have to wait for the computer? Should I put my priority on processing power or a solid state drive? Is retina worth it? Please weigh in with any input. Thanks!

I use this exact computer. Works fucking phenomenally. I've edited several projects in Premiere, AE, plus extensive PS, Illustrator, and Lightroom work, never had an issue with it. I use a 22 inch external monitor with it that works perfectly. If you have specific questions, PM me.

Definitely get a solid state.

That being said, 13" mbps dont have dedicated graphics cards, which helps out alot with premiere and after effects.

If you can afford a 15" retina, I would get it.

Dang, really can't go the 15 inch route, as tempting as it is. Keep in mind that this is my upgrade from an old 27 inch iMac with a 3.2 Ghz i3 and 4 gb of ram so as awesome as it would be to get something really nice I am really looking to stay as close to a grand as possible. Basically my biggest concern is the first one having a better processor and no solid state drive, the second one have medium processor and a sold state drive and the last one having retina (don't actually know how much this matters) a solid state drive, but the slowest processor. I know theoretically what all the stats mean but I don't really know so well how they will translate into real world performance. Is a 2.9GHz Dual-core Intel i7 with a normal hard drive going to run Premier faster then a 2.5GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz on a solid state drive? and if the solid state is really that much faster is it worth the loss in processor to jump to the last one with retina? Thanks!

Don't ever use a better computer or you'll be very disappointed haha I have a very similar spec'd mb air and compared to my editing desktop... fuck haha

Ha, I don't doubt you. But really for the purposes that I need it for, it works great. I used to have a 13 inch i5, and this is a damn good step up from that alone.

So, Mr. Rudy says get the first one, Eheath says don't get any of them but if I do get one of the last two, anyone else have any definitive input? I am tempted to get the last one just because it is the newest and has retina and the solid state drive. Thanks!

No, flash memory is always the way to go over a slightly higher clocked cpu and a HDD at 5400 rpm, seriously thats the worst hard drive and bottle neck you can get

So i just got a quick release plate so i could fit my camera on my glidecam but the quick release plate isn't flat on the bottom so i can only mount it on the leftmost hole on the cheese grate. This obviously means its way off center and i have to stack up the weights on the right side. Will this be a big deal to film with and stuff? The glide cam is still balanced but the camera is just way off to one side.

What do you guys use for fluid video heads? I want something good, but I dont want to break the bank. Right now I have a bal head, and it's not so much for panning.

I want to spend about $120, but I could probably save up to 150ish. I was looking at the Manfrotto 502ah, and it looks nice. But out of my price range currently.

Do you guys have any other suggestions?

If you're going with a Manfrotto head, just get a 701 and don't even bother with anything more expensive. It isn't any nicer.

I have the 701 and have shot almost exclusively tripod this season. It pans well if you get the hang of it, but it's not impeccably smooth. Like Landis said, it's totally good enough and all you'll really need.

^ I feel like that was a bit longer than it needed to be as there were a lot of repeated tricks (nose presses stood out) and shots of him in between or after jibs. Also, It definitely had a raw run feel to it (which I enjoyed) so the few tripod shots kind of seemed out of place. I would have tried to include a few more to keep the variation.
I'm no expert but that's just what I noticed. Good work tho!

I though it was unwatchable because of the stretch. It ruined all the good filming and editing.

Go back, and crop it and it'll be 1000 times better.

Whats a good beginner telephoto? I have a kit 18-55 and an 8mm (for a t2i), want something with more zoom...
Is the kit 55-250 decent or is there a better lens for about/ a little more than the price of that one?

one is 645 and the other is 6x7. Mamiya puts out some of the nicest glass money can buy, especially the rz primes. Though the RZ is huge pain in the ass to use outside of a studio/non-walking environment. Haven't used the 645, but I'd imagine it's just as good. Ask Vandersteeze or Balto.

I've shot on one and it felt pretty durable and that's a decent lens. Good starter camera for sure. I'm not a huge fan of the way the Olympus feels in my hands but that's more personal preference. but for 35 bucks not bad, ask him if he's got a bag/film/flash or other accessories.

The lens is great, but the body is very meh. It is very plastic-y and doesn't feel very durable or well built especially comparing it to other film cameras that aren't much more expensive. Even compared to my plastic-y Canon Rebel SLR, the OM-10 feels a lot less well built.

How much is a decent camera for filming activities such as skiing? High quality video.

What do you guys use? I'm curious because I don't know much about video production and I need to learn so that I can make a solid edit. Also  what video editing programs do you guys use?

Anybody have any experience will/know anything about the Plustek opticfilm 7500i SE? I just saw it in my local classifieds for $250 and I think I could get it for $200.

Also while I'm at it can somebody shed some light on the necessary equipment and cost to process both color and black and white film? I'd probably just start with b&w but I'd expand after a while.

I don't want to make a new thread, but maybe somebody familiar with software synths can help me out?

I'm just messing around with stuff like crystal, tyrell N6 and magical 8 bit, stuff like that. All in garage band currently. I just got a midi interface for my keyboard, because I normally just do piano so I never bothered with all this.

The synths have presets, and sometimes it seems that certain presets drop notes. But it's not a hardware issue, I don't think. Some of them seem to only allow one note to be played at a time. So if I'm trying to play something, the entire left hand or right hand part never comes through, or you get bits and pieces. but other presets are fine with me playing like 20 notes at a time if I wanted. Magical 8 bit doesn't have this issue, and it's only with certain settings on the other synths.

I'm not recording or anything, just playing to myself. I've got a 2010 mbp, 10.6 snow leopard, 4gb ram, 2.4ghz intel, so I don't believe it's the hardware. The question is, what parameters might be causing this? Is that a function or something common to synths? The fact that some groups of settings allow many notes and some don't leads me to believe there's a setting that causing this.
