What the fuck happened to the 2008 and 2009 us open?

pipe only, no slope, lame.

Is pipe more popular among skiers at places where they actually have pipes? Here in the lower east coast it seems like no one who actually skis could care less about it.

Every pipe ive seen on the EC is sketchy, so i try and stay away from it. but if there were nice ones around, i would probably try it a little more.

major sponsors had to pull out and it isnt really cheap to put on a high profile event like that.

The US Freeskiing Open is no more as of right now and there wont be one this year either. Financial issues and lack of sponsors made this happen. I just hope one day we get another Us Open, it was such a great event and it was also great way for up and comers to break into the scene.

yeap if the industry wasn't so hung up on the money side of skiing the event would still go on......

Q: how much cash does it take to have a decent terrain park and pipe?
A: none its already there for the season

q: how much does marketing cost?
a: forum posts on ns are free!

q: what if someone gets hurt?
a: ski patrol is already paid salary to be there.

q: who will film?
a: any one of the dozens of top notch filmers that film every event anyways. then it would get posted to ns.com and get more exposure than usfreeskiingopen.com

q: prize money
a: hundreds of athletes pay hundreds of dollars to compete three is plenty of cash plus its not like ski companies wouldn't sponsor it.

q: what about judges do they get paid?
a:why would a judge make anymore than 100 dollars to judge, they are a fucking judge and they get into sweet parties, and will probably get laid.

the mountain already most likely has a salaried event crew.

im not seeing where the moneys going. oh wait someone has to type up a start list and organize names. then you might need a calculator to add up the judges totals.

the sheer boost in the economy from having fans travel there and stay in hotels and buy food and beer is worth having an event.

i go on ski trips for fun. and saying oh my god there isnt enough money for the poor atheletes is a joke too. because 98 percent of them leave with nothing anyways aside from a fun time.

there's enough open slope comps now that the lack of us open doesn't really matter

Wasn't it because Lifestyle condoms was the lead sponsor? Because Lifestyle was lead sponsor, the event ended up getting pulled from TV at the last minute and the whole thing suffered hugely. Then they tried to cut back and just do pipe, which was a complete joke.

People need to stop asking this question. Obviously people care, there's a fucking thread about it.

Just a guess, with absolutely no information, but based on my experience, the US Open had a budget of easily $125,000.  From my impressions, having talked with some of the organizers as they were working to figure it out, that figure is quite low.
