Replacing helmets

How often do you replace your helmet? And how hard of crashes do you think you need to want to replace a helmet? Giro seems to have a lighter construction so I would think it would be the most sensitive.

ive had my giro 9 for 3 seasons now, its going into retirement after this one im pretty sure.

I used my good helmet for many years, then got a cheap-o crummy one and it's lasted me 2 years and i should have prob. got a new one last year. I bang it up pretty bad

the helmets are only made to withstand an impact of 12mph, falling over from standing up and hitting your head is a 10 mph impact,
