Skibase jumping

i was watching In Deep and i was wondering (through my ignorance of skibase) if they use a mechanism to kick off their skis, if so how does it work.

They're old Look bindings that have an upward release lever. This mechanism had a penchant for failing, which is why its not used anymore. Its pretty much the direct cause of Shanes death.
