Nikon to Canon EOS lens adaptor ring

I have searched this, and have found nothing of any use so sorry if this is a repost.

I have been researching lens adaptors/mounts so I can use my 55-200mm Sigma (for Nikon) lens on my Canon EOS 550D (t2i). I have found various different options, but the price difference is just ridiculous!

For example:

Has anyone on NS used an adaptor ring and would recommend one? Or tell me why there might be such a drastic price difference as I can't figure it out.

the advantage to the b&h one is that its probably slightly more precisely machined, and with b&h being a legit store, you are guaranteed a high quality product.

that being said, 99% of the ebay adapters work just fine, just read reviews on the page, and check their feedback first.

to put it in perspective, pbraunstein uses a cheap ebay adapter to use pentax lenses on his 7d and they work fine. id say go with the ebay one, even if its crap and you have to buy another one from a different source itll still be cheaper.

The more expensive ones usually are just rip offs, however some of them make it possible to use lenses without a manual aperture ring on a camera that can't communicate with it. If you have a manual aperture ring, just buy the cheapest ones (I own two of the ones in the link above, they are legit!)

Thankyou both for your help! Much appreciated. Does using a lens ring converter like the ones suggested mean you're unable to use auto-focus? Not a major issue really, but I have read mixed reviews on the internet and would just like to know.

yeah no autofocus.

however i know for pentax, and id assume for nikon adapters as well, you can buy ones with a chip that lets the camera still recognize when the lense has focused properly manually. the motor doesnt work but you have confirmation of focus at least.

does your lens have a manual aperture ring? because if not you might need a special adapter. for older manual lenses you can just use the metal ring, and then shoot in either full manual, or aperture priority. then you have to stop down yourself manually.

Well I have a Sigma 55-200mm lens for Nikon which does not have an aparture ring on it - and am researching to find if I'd be able to film on a Canon 550d with it. I'm not fussed about whether auto focus will work or not to be honest, not a major issue. Would just like confirmation that I'll be able to film with it or not before I go ahead an purchase one.

im not sure without a manual aperture ring. because the lens wont be able to communicate with the body electronically to determine the aperture.

You'll need to have a lens with a manual aperture. You can find cheaper used manual nikon lenses on ebay at good prices.

Also, go with the nicer adapter. I have a bunch of the cheap ones, and they loosen up over time so your lens will start to have play in it when you focus.

I see. Well thankyou for your help! I do have a bunch of really old lens' which fit onto my 35mm film camera which have manual aparture rings but I doubt that they'd work with a modern camera.

if they are nikon mount they will work with a nikon adapter. ive used pentax lenses from the 70s and 80s just fine.

They're for an old 35mm Praktica camera, so I'll have a look but I doubt I'll be able to find a convertion ring for them. Thankyou for your help and advice ben!

I have found this M42 to Canon adaptor which would mean I could attach my old Praktica lens' onto my 550D. However, I have read the reviews and everyone says it works great on manual picture mode, but would this work with manual video mode?

yeah. if anything they are nicer because they have big smooth focus rings.
