there are a bunch of different car threads on here- but a car that is stanced or flush is what gets me going- most of these pics are off of stanceworks, vortex and bimmerforums- but I thought it would be nice to show you guys some

Look in to 240s and miatas. Parts are easier to find, cheaper and theyre easier than hell to work on. I dont think youll be able to find an AE 86, gts, or sr5 corolla for that cheap cause most people know what they are now days, but if you can find one go for that. Also look into a toyota cressida. Basically the AE86's older brother with a 7mge from an MKIII supra in it. I just picked up an MX83 (1992) cressi that has a welded diff and a supra tranny swap and its fun as hell to drive, thing gets sideways with no effort. Its a surprisingly well balanced car for rather big. Only problem is that parts can be hard to come across at times. The nice thing about them though is that they are the same chassis as the toyota chaser (like a 240 to a silvia) and they take 1jz swaps really well. Apparently you can even use the stock harness from a 1j and only need to splice one wire. Oh and you can find them in pretty damn good shape for $600-1200. Pretty rad drifter if you ask me.
i like the look and size of the e30, but will also look for cheap miatas. if i can find an e30 with a blown engine, get it for under a grand, and do an m50/m52 swap or even an s series motor if i can find one cheap would be ideal i would think. just trying to find something a little different and more fun to drive than my trucks.
You should never, ever, ever go into buying/building a car thinking you are going to make your money back let alone profit. Not saying it can't be done, but it's not easy. It's especially difficult to make back money if you are building/rebuilding the car because costs of small unplanned parts rack up impossibly fast.
And just to clarify 1200 is what you want to spend on the base car? or the project as a whole?
exactly this. NEVER expect to see a cent of what you put into a car find its way back into your pocket. if you happen to be lucky and make some money off a project, awesome, but 99.9% of the time a project car will never be an investment.
if youre looking to make some money off a car, hop onto craigslist, look for some "mechanic's special"/"fix"/etc, basically something that is/can be an easy fix for someone who knows what theyre doing (assuming you actually know what youre doing) and buy/fix/sell/flip some cars to make some money off them.
it is a very slow process that does not guarantee profit, but if you do things right, you CAN make SOME money. i worked in a service department at a ford dealership, watched a few mechanics try, even fewer succeed. there is no such thing as easy money, and there is no guarantee that any/all hard work/money you put into one of these projects will yield profit
you said above you lowered your bike 2.5 inches and you are talking function??? lowering a bike just an inch affects the handling. lowering 2.5 makes it near worthless for twisties... thats for drag.... smh
this isnt very good advice. no offense but alot of this is wrong.
a miata or an e30 is a FANTASTIC first drift/track car. miatas especially, they are cheap, very reliable and easy to find parts for. they are japanese made and have been in production for like three decades and have sold in MASSIVE numbers and have a equally massive enthusiast following that borders on being a straight-up car religion. the shear number of miatas on the road alone means that if you cant find a part on a shelf or on the internet somewhere, one of your friends probably knows a guy who has that part you need in a toolbox drawer. the miata is one of the simplest cars on the road. you could perform even the largest jobs with just a simple set of hand tools.
second, the mazda miata from the factory has just shy of a dead-ass 50/50 weight distribution. that is perfect. i dont know what you think "ideal" is but i promise if you walked around the paddock on a drift day (or ANY track day at ANY track) and asked every serious driver in there what weight ditribution they were shooting for on their car they would unanimously answer 50/50.
miatas, due to their small size and low weight, handle like a street legal go cart. they seriously lack power but more than make up for it in agility. also they are so much fucking fun to drive and have one of the nicest feeling manual transmissions i have ever expirienced.
the e30 has many of the same things going for it, again, like all BMWs, the e30 has near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution. the e30 also, like the miata, has a raving-lunatic cult following. included in the purchase price of either of those cars comes a huge aftermarket following and a ridiculously tight-knit community of people with fantastic quantities of knowledge about your car.
the e30 is also incredibly simple to work on. factory it has a simple SOHC straight-six, the first engine i ever personally tore down and rebuilt, from the ground up was actually an M20B25 out of a 90' e30. (i actually combined it with some parts from an m20b27 "etta" motor to make a 2.7l stroker) e30s have ludicrously simple suspension components and still usually relatively cheap parts, expect to spend more on an e30 than you would a japanese sports car, but you wont be breaking the bank either. the e30 is a little trickier to drive fast than a miata, but i think makes a better drift car. also you can actually fit in one if you are over 6'1" and they are a much prettier car as well (just in my opinion)
honestly man i dont know a goddamned thing about old volvos other than they are swedish, definiately heavy, probably complicated and almost certainly rare as FUCK and probably have little to no aftermarket support in the way of performance parts or just non-factory replacement parts in general. also, anyone without much mechanical knowledge starting out with an old, swedish, 5cyl turbo car is probably going to end poorly. the idea is to have a fun car that starts most of the times you turn the key and provides you with alot of smiles instead of alot of headaches and time spent scouring obscure corners of the internet for advice and parts. would an old volvo be unique and cool? totally. is it really a reasonable car to have as your first project sports car? definately not.
850s are FWD. But some 850 turbos/T5Rs were available with 5-speeds in Canada.
If you're going to do a drift Volvo, look at a 740 or old 240. The 242 is a really cool looking car. Avoid 760s though, they were plagued with problems.
you're going to have a hell of a time trying to "drift" an 850... they are FWD.. (and good luck finding a manual version)
also idiot advice on the parts availability thing.. it's much easier/cheaper to mod a miata (or an e30 for that matter) for less money than the volvos you suggested.

The four-seater model adopts a pickup-truck body that measures 231.3 inches (5,867mm) long, 83.1 inches (2,111mm) wide and 87.0 inches (2,209mm) tall, or 43.5 inches (1,105mm) longer, 8.9 inches (226mm) wider and 10.7 inches (272mm) taller than the regular G63 AMG 4x4.
Other interesting facts include a huge ground clearance of 18.1 inches (460mm), approach and departure angles of 52 degrees (+16 over the regular G63 AMG) and 54 degrees (+27) respectively, while the 6x6 truck tips the scales at 8,322-pound or 3,775 kilos. The truck runs on 37-inch wheels with a bead-plate design all around.
Performance and fuel economy numbers are not available yet, but Mercedes head of G-class development, Axel Harries, told Autoweek magazine that the G63 AMG 6x6 will complete the 0-62 mph (100km/h) sprint in less than six seconds, have an electronically governed top speed of 100mph (160km/h) and return a fuel economy of around 13mpg (18lt/100km or 15.6mpg UK).
He added that Mercedes plans to build 20 to 30 trucks per year, with the G63 AMG 6x6 to be the brand's second most expensive car in the range behind the $457,000 (€350,000) SLS Electric Drive.
