Subaru Talk. Advice?

So my ford explorer has a full page list of what needs to be repaired, serviced, or completely replaced. its an 01, but its a rebuilt with a salvage title, so i cant get much, if any trade in value for it.

thinking it might be time to get a subaru. i was thinking something around 1998-2002. My real question is how long do subarus last? i have heard 200k, 300k, and even more in some cases.  Most the cars in my price range have somewhere around 100,000-150,000 miles on them. would it be a risk to get a car with that high of miles? or is that average for a ten year old subaru?

also since i'm moving to canada for school i'll be driving back to spokane (3 hr's) once a month or so i would imagine. besides that its just to the mountain and to school. since its mostly going to be in town driving i dont think i will put many miles on it.

would buying a 150,000k subaru be a good investment or a bad decision?

Once you get around ~150k random stuff is gonna start crapping out, expect to spend a few hundo every few months keeping it running, this goes for any car. Are subaru's more reliable than the average european import? probably. Honda or toyota? about the same.

Any car with 150k will be a gamble, at the very least have it checked out by a mechanic before your buy.

i bout a 96' outback legacy about a month ago with 178,XXX on it. bout a week later i ended up droppin 850 on a new radiator and some front axle repairs as well as the drive belts.

its coo now though :]

Mine is 4 years old and 80,000 miles on it... :)

It is right at that stage where everything needs replacing... new brakes, new belt, new blah blah blah. So if you can get one thats only around 20,000 over this midlife crisis stage, you will be doing pretty good.

it only really needs or last me 2 years, and if i put on 25k a year, thats 2k a month roughly. i dont think i'll put that many miles on it.

I have an '01 Legacy GT with 130,000 or so on it. Head Gaskets blew at like 115,000, I guess its pretty common for that engine to do that. Otherwise its a beast.

Ive got a pilot with 145,000 and just had to replace the breaks and it burns through oil super fast which sucks i keep having to buy more.

As long as the car had regular maintenance and the required timing belt change around 100-120K, and a trusted mechanic gives the approval, you should be good to go. Subaru's can last a long time if maintained, like any car I suppose, but they are pretty reliable in my opinion.

Buy a fucking Volvo. They run forever. My friend has a '91 240 with 250k on it, and nothing has ever gone wrong, and another '86 240 with the same miles. My sister has an '01 XC70 with 170k on it and it's still goin strong.

my bmw has about 130 on it, its a 98. But ive had everything done through the dealership, sure it costs a little bit more but last time i was there there was a 89 with 360k on it :o

I actually did have a major one about then. New front breaks, coolant flush and all that.

Depends on what you get. The XC70 is a beast in the snow. Volvo=a Scandinavian company, so they know their shit about snow.

I have been looking at used subarus for a while and have been mostly looking at 1998 99 legacy outbacks, but recently there was an impreza outback posted.
What is the difference between the two? The legacy just looks like it has a bit more room in the back. Ps i know fuck all about cars.

I had a 2002 Outback Impreza Sport. It was really nice. Theyre just really expensive to fix if you dont know anybody that can give you a deal.

I bought an 02' wrx with 100k on it back in june after my other car got totalled.   i am really happy i went with subaru.  I have put over 10k on it and have had no problems what so ever.  parts aren't to expensive, just try to stay away from a dealership for repairs and such no matter what u drive u will get ripped off.  my friend was driving around an XC70 for a while definantly a good car.  volvo from my knowledge was expensive but since being bought out by ford parts are probably less expensive now.
