i like where it is now. its big/popular enough to offer opportunities and get enough money to put on legit events and such, but not big enough to become overcommercialized and overhyped like snowboarding. its still small enough that anyone who does it can legitimately consider themselves unique and part of a core sport.

1. more accessibility to ski locations (e.g. - certain airlines have added routes to Silverton, CO/ Aspen, CO/ Bozeman, MT)
2. back to accessibility ski locations will have better road way systems ( e.g. - sea the sky highway whcih was rebuilt for the olympics)
3. expansion of ski areas - money talks, and ski areas will compete for bragging rights of square acreage, number of lifts, and the lift accessible terrain. they will continuously petition and try and get permits to expand until it is granted because local governments are too broke to not consider the wind fall amounts of money the ski resorts give them)
4. better facilities - competition among ski areas will force them to compete in more areas - food, changing rooms, bathrooms, lodges, etc
5. more creative use of existing land - in effort to try and lure customers, just like theme parks add rides. certain places will make more use of their terrain as they have increased snow making capacity from more money from the ski industry getting bigger.
6. increasing coverage in sports. and well now when you aren't skiing, you can watch skiing. and ski videos, with more skiers, trying more insane and unique stuff to capture your eye.
7. more skis and products for us to choose from - we have unique demands, and there is a niche for almost any kind of ski or outfit. plus life saving devices in use for avalanches continue to come out and are becoming more advanced.

this is what will happen as snowsports get bigger. the downside of this whole conundrum is that wasatch blvd is bumper to bumper with 4x4's and 98% of those vehicles getting less than 20mpg on their way up the canyons. if global warming is true, skiers are killing their own sport more than anyone else. (we fly out to places, use snowmobiles to get to places, use helicopters to get to places, use 4x4 vehicles to get to places

Ski corridors like I-70 and LCC / BCC / Park City should have highspeed rail, and tunnels through mountains even.

Imagine if a tourist had the ability to get from Alta - Brighton - The Canyons in a 10 minute railway ride instead of a 45 minute trek through the city and over i-80.

1. Better skis (if this sport gets big, they will soon get fancy professors and engineers to make skis for brands)

2. We will see more freeskiing on TV

3. If more people skiing, it will be harder to keep up = imagine all the sick things pros wil do to stay on the top

i thought of a lot of good things when i read the title, but it's to much effort to write all 1839 lines... conclusion is: it's good if skiing gets bigger

There are a million different directions skiing can go, not just "bigger". It's up to you to keep it positive. Skiing is what you make it. I personally think the ski industry should be run by skiers for skiers, not some outside corporation that would decide where it is going.

same here, i ski vegas and there mabye 6 or so freeskiers here, we still have comps and such, but i wouldnt mind it getting alittle more popular over here

I can see it getting bigger...and honestly I get stoked when I see kids suddenly say to me " dude im going to try park skiing next year" because they watch edits they see it on tv and they understand it.I just love watching it grow even in a small community like mine because it also makes me feel good about myself because i am doing something that others want to try.Skiing is starting to look dope either if you ski or not( i know kids who watch the x games and stuff and they dont ski,same with toms firsthand)

hahaha, for sure!

i guess it's good for the financial aspect, but already it's aggravating as hell with all these little noobs coming into the sport. Just look at this site, there are huge increases in threads where kids don't know anything. I know "we were all there at one point" but we were all there together and went through the growth of the sport together. Now kids just try to dress the part and talk shit about who is the best, and DUB this and DUB that, it's just fucked. People who come from areas where skiing isn't "big" don't have the culture of skiing ingrained, and that makes a big difference.

It feels more and more like skateboarding than anything else, a sport where little Joey Bag O Donuts sees one video (or the X Games) and says "that is cool! I wanna be a freestyle skier" but has no skiing background. I can't imagine trying to be a skier if your parents aren't skiers and didn't teach you from a young age.

so ya, basically, it sucks that it's getting bigger.

You made some very ignorant statements...
1. It doesnt matter where you come from, you can love skiing just as much as anyone else. Im from Nj and skiing here is some of the worst on the east coast. but ive been skiing my entire life and i love this sport.. most of the time i spend more time on NS then i do sleeping.
2. It still does not suck that skiing is getting bigger. think about it. there will be skiing video games, it might hit espn some day, pros will make more money, and prices of skis might go down. so in my opinion its great that skiing is getting bigger.

the ski making industry is already making top of the line skis. yes most of them arent great quality, but the technology and aspects of the ski itself is already booming.

and of course its good if skiing gets bigger, theres obviously reasons why we would want to keep it the way it is, but the results of it getting bigger crush that of wanting to keep it small.

...and if you ever want people to take you seriously, use the correct english language

Growth can happen 2 ways, the companies can grow and sell more products, or the audience can grow.

There is a bit of a problem right now in the action sports community. The audience isn't growing so the companies are trying to sell different products to all the same people. This creates more competition with in the brands but at some point it forces the smaller companies out.

At the moment, skiing is growing. It is safe for brands like Armada to start an outerwear line. And it is safe for Saga to produce more and so forth. The audience is growing so that is fine.

The ski industry as a whole isn't going anywhere. If anything it is getting pulled into the action sports industry (where it belongs). Soon enough surfers will want to ski. The barrier between snowboarding and skiing is graying. There is nothing wrong with that. Sure there have been poor influences in the snowboard industry. But that industry took off. Skiing is growing much more gradually giving the consumer a lot more power as to what companies we allow to grow.

And there is nothing wrong with people learning to ski later in life. Don't you want others to know how much fun life is capable of being? I certainly do.
