Trip out west

So this is my senior year in high school and I've saved up a bunch of dough from workin all summer.... and i wanna take a trip out west with a couple good friends.

We are stuck on places to go though. We like to ski park, but if the snows there the pow is awesome too.

I just wanted to know which place would be the best choice and why. Weve been thinkin about Breck, Keystone, and Park City, but any other ideas for somewhere to go would be awesome too cause we cant decide where to go

i heard park city has it all... pow, park, trees, and a sick nightlife

i might go out there this january with a friend of mines family and that seems the best place to go to be able to get a little of everything... minus backcountry type stuff

i went out to park city last year for like 3 days with the family but this is kidna a different trip.. i really like how theres like PC, Canyons, and Deer Valley so close tho... plus the actual city looks pretty sweet

we'll be 18.... so no (legal) alchohol consumption ..... Cant say it wont happen tho..

but yea i hear bird is awesome too i really think PC is the way to go, but i hear breck is nice too... but idk if it can top Park City??

If you went to park city, you would also have the opportunity to ski salt lake, which is Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude.  That way you can ski sick park at PC and if you're not satisfied with the snow then you can always go to one of the four previously mentioned mountains that are not far away.  This past year I went to Park City, Brighton and Solitude.  Great mix and a great time.

ya i would say salt lake area becuase theres just so much to ski from park city to alta snowbird cannyons but dont ski dear valley worst place ive ever skied in my entire life trails were litterly so crowded you could turn but other options are mt.hood, squaw, mamoth and of course whistler but im not sure how there park is

yea man weve been lookin into whistler and the tahoe area too. but it seems like whistler is more expensive and you dont get as much as PC, Tahoe, Breck.etc.

I guess my question is should we consider breck too or it seems like Park City is the best choice?......

breck is my favorite place to ski with snow or without also keystone is close by and ive heard thats good vail is nice but super expensive it has a great park with a high speed quad the only thing i hated about vail is that all the beutiful double black bowls will end you up on a catwalk where you will have to pole for a while also in the spring you can get sweet deals plus bonus of some concerts if your around closing weekend i skied 2 days at vail closing one day decent conditions skied park next day had 4 inches of snow which is enough to keep a guy from the east satisfied same thing happened at breckenridge but i stayed at a hotel 5 minute walk from the lift for about 100 bucks a night but frisco is where all the bums stay and where all the inexpensive stuff is because once you enter vail you wont find anything cheap

Honestly I wasn't too stoked on Park City's Park when I went. They lost their Park Manager to Copper Mountain because of Woodward. If you come to Summit County hit me up. I live in Breck and will show you a good time. If you decide to go to Park City though, you have the Canyons which is super legit, Salt Lake City close by, and there are tons of friendly people in Park City as well. If you come to Summit County, you also have Keystone, Vail, Copper, ABay, Loveland, Etc.

I am sure that you will have a great time at either... They are both awesome places with a super good vibe. Safe travels!

I'm not 21 yet, but last time i stayed in gov. camp was still legit. We ended up smoking with our front desk clerk and his sweet ass dog melvin.

hood. meadows is killer in the winter. good park and better terrain than t-line. if you hit a good storm it should be pretty good

I am not a die hard park rider. But Park City area resorts suck if you are coming from out east. They are great first day resorts. You get to adjust to the altitude in Park City and fly down a bunch of easy groomers.

Jupiter won't even be open until probably New Years Eve. 9990 at The Canyons won't have the coverage to make it a powly gnar fest either around Christmas.

Say you come out during Spring Break...well it will either suck or be awesome. Spring storms = fuck yeaaah. But sunbaked cement = fuck noooo. I've had the "privilege" to monkey around park city area resorts on sunbaked spring afternoons. Things weren't fun. You just sat and cruised groomers, meanwhile there was actually fluffy powder in bcc / lcc.

You should go to Whistler if you can afford it. Whistler has tons of terrain and you've seen the videos...tons of park to play with.

SLC is cool. But to get your "park and gnar fix" you kinda have to rent a car and go up BCC / LCC (alta, brighton, etc) and if you are under 25 you ahve an underage rental fee. PM me if you want to find out how to get the underage rental fee waived.

but yeah you have to rent, because the bus system just isn't what you are looking for on vacation really unless you are so trashed after "apres ski" that you can't drive, and its safer that you just sit down an soak in the views of salt lake city.

Lodging in park city isn't cheap. Dillon has the least expensive lodging for your keystone / breck skiing adventures it seems, and you don't have to deal with too much of i-70.

I haven't been to breck or keystone. But financially, flying in to denver or SLC is going to be one of the most inexpensive ski trips I am aware of unless you find resorts running really good specials, which they do....

ya gotta hear from some california ns'ers who can talk about mammoth / tahoe and what they have to offer, plus bozeman has a bit of terrain to play with as well.

It seems like Park City would be pretty expensive, for staying and lift tickets. If you were going to the Breck/Keystone area for around a week, you could buy a season pass, which last I checked (2 years ago, so it might be different) was only $400. Or, Mammoth would be awesome, that's where I want to take a trip this year.

Park City, Breck, and Keystone are pretty much east coast mountains in the sense that they are flat. Not sure why you'd go there if you want to experience what the west has to offer...

Stevens Pass, WA has an awesome combination of powder and park.

You are a complete retard.  Over spring break you are either skiing 40 º sunny park days at PC or skiing multiple feet of fresh at the Bird/Alta.

To the OP however, if I was in your position I would go to whistler.  Colorado only has parks, SLC has everything except alcohol for you, and whistler has everything.

I don't see the retarded comment in my post.

I said in spring you are skiing either sun baked cement snow, or powder in bcc / lcc. you have to wait until the snow starts to soften up to even enjoy park city for SKIING THE GNAR!

Im just saying, Jupiter lift was not much fun early March this year until you guys had the snow storm on like march 7th. Went to the top of the lift and you were landing on snow cement all the way down until mid-afternoon.

The terrain park is up and is certainly large. the nice temps in the spring time work well.


i dont disagree that the statement temperatures will liekyl be 40 degrees in park city in the spring. and the fact that bcc/lcc will have tons of fresh snow.

Go to Jackson Hole. Sickest place ever. There is always pow to be had there. Trust me. They have a park but i went in it twice the week i was there because i was having so much fun hitting cliffs and powder. And anyways consider the whole mountain as a park.

i was at the canyons december 27th last year. complete shit show in terms of people and snow. the gondola rides at the end of the day had huge lines down to the parking lot. 9990 didn't have adequate amounts of snow to really get down without running over a few rocks.

everywhere they had snow making capabilities they were laying snow down.

now come New Years eve this story changed since they received a couple feet in a short period of time.

but park city around christmas time.......coverage is thin from what i gather, and hell like I said...jupiter lift wasn't even open at park city until late december last year.


Basically if you are going during xmas break you want to find the place that has the most generous amounts of snowfall in the earlier season months.

Hope i can you out. Last year( first week of march) i went to Slc, Utah and we rent a house. It was cheaper and better then a hotel. 30 minute from the airport and like 45minutes from alta/bird, solitude and brighton. So i stay there like 8days if i remember well. First day,which was monday whit it up Solitude, last snowfall was 3 days ago and i did some hiking for some pow. Solitude is amazing, i don't even wait 2minute in the lift line ...but they don't have park. Second days, we headed up to Snowbasin,  no new snow but we found some in the no name area, it was sick. Plus the park is really nice there and the lodge is so nice. On Wednesday we hit the bird, which i suggest you, awesome terrain and frendly people. On Thursday we goes to Alta and it was snowing, so me and my brother pass the entire days in the cathrine area whicch was super nice. Friday we head up to Solitude again, like 20 inches of new snow have falled over the night. It was the best days of my life! No one was there ive wait like 10 minutes in the entire days for the lift, which is nothing for me. We meet up a guide there and we followed im the entire days. It was pretty sick, i got some picture in my profile. Last days i went to The canyon and its very nice but crowded. The park is pretty decent too. So heres my 2 cents, if you are going to salt lake city or park city, i would suggest you to shred pow... no park dude. I guess your from the east and in the east we dom't have 20 inche of pow in 1 days. So hope i helped you out. Sorry for the long post and my english which is pretty bad.

For someone not use to riding big mountains, Jackson Hole would be a stupid place to go. They need to warm up to the mountains. That's how people die, because they think everything is a big park and a joke.

And whoever said PC and Summit are flat is also retarded. There is as much steeps as there are flats, and it's good for people who aren't use to riding so much vert to have some flatter runs to warm up to. If they went right to Jackson or Steven's Pass it would be one massive workout and no fun.

Breck and PC are not only good for skiing, it's good for nightlife, parties, and all around vibe. Breck and Park City have been in the top 10 or maybe even 5 resort towns in the U.S. for I don't know how many years now. So for you cluck's saying "why don't you see what the west really has to offer" should probably reevaluate.

But more honestly, it is true that Summit would probably be cheaper than Park City.

I was in SLC this past february with a couple of friends for a senior year trip. This is what we did and it worked out perfectly.

We stayed at the Best Western Cottontree Inn in Sandy (just outside of SLC, little bit quieter, still a good number of restaurants and stuff). Every morning a bus stopped literally right in front of the hotel, and from there we could get to Brighton, Solitude, and Alta/Bird. Of those mountains, we just went to Brighton and Snowbird, both of which are incredible, and if you go out you definitely need to hit them up. We also skied Park City, but we were kinda lucky in that we happened to meet up with a friend who was there with their family, and they gave us a ride. It would probably be more tricky for you.

After skiing, if we wanted to get into SLC, it was incredibly simple. Just take the hotel shuttle to the TRAX station (the train), and take that strait into the city. really cheap and easy. A few sketchy people on the train at night but thats to be expected.

Overall, the entire trip went off without a hitch, and it was incredible. I'm sure where ever you go it would be sick, thats just how we did it. Good Luck.

YOUR CHOICE SHOULD BE SOMEWHERE IN THE PNW.

This winter is going to be a La Nina winter. That means that California and, often, Colorado, are not the picks for this winter. SLC is always a good bet, regardless of the year. But with a La Nina, a -PDO, and the entrance of a PDO cool phase that hasn't been seen since the 1950s, THIS IS THE YEAR.

WHISTLER. BAKER. REVELSTOKE. KICKING HORSE. BANFF. RED. CRYSTAL. HOOD. BACHELOR. WHITEFISH. The list goes on and on...

only thing that gets me about utah is the air quality.


its just kind of out of this world when you live in an area where you just never see that stuff.

but i hear many ski areas have inversions around them which provide for low quality air when there hasn't been a storm?

I actually wasn't stoked on it this year at all... When we had the Queen's Cup comp none of us were stoked on it. Pros or AM's. They lost their head park manager to Copper Mountain because of Woodward.

i been to breck, keystone, coppper every year for the last 4 years. Breck is a big mountain, lot a park, NEVER dissapointed with powder, towards the top theres at least a foot and a half, after lot o snow gets up to two 1/5. after snow in keystone, 2.5. but keystones a pretty small mountain. copper is FULL of park, 1/2 of the time theres a mini park at the top of a chairlift, theres one run you can take and hit 5 parks. including the huge one, catalyst. vail is also close by and that place is amazing, powda, powda, powda, powda. not much park though, but i only go there for the pow anyway

This. Except Keystone isn't small... their runs are a ton longer than Breck's. It's just more complicated to explore the entire resort. And Copper is definitely underrated altogether. Expect big things from their parks in the coming years. Thanks to my job, Woodward @ Copper!!!

PC is nice if you can swing the cost of living.

slc has poopy air quality but you are "central" to the ski spots i suppose, either that or kimball junction.

i'd like to compare areas to ski/live, but utah probably tops it off since everything is so accessible.
