Ive never really gotten much in a way of critique or opinions on my phototgraphy. I started getting into it about a year or so ago. Wanted to share some of my work with you guys. Dont hate please, no one likes it. Constructive critizism please. Heres my flickr link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jaybirdjason/
one thing i would say is some of your b&w stuff seems almost overly contrasty. your blacks sort of takeover the whole photo, i feel like theres no midtones. maybe thats just me though.
those are great photos man. this is going to sound like a dumb question but fuck it, those are all RAW correct? becuase they are exceptionally clear and i just got my 7D and although im shooting in .jpg, they do not come out like that.
judging from the exif data, I don't think they were shot RAW, and no offense but with little knowledge of a dslr and just having picked up your 7d, I wouldn't expect you to have photos like that (yet).
OP: they're great pics, I like em. And I agree with above, there is a lot of black in your pics, though I don't think that it looks bad.
Thanks a ton guys. I do realize I tend to overdo my b&w's contrast. I'm working on that. I shoot with a Nikon D2H, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, Nikon 50mm f/1.8, and a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8. Oh, and ido not shoot RAW. All jpeg. Keep em coming!
if i know or i am trying to shoot a nice high quality photo on my 7D, do i just shoot the RAW/JPEG button in order to capture both? and should i have it shoot a raw/jpeg everytime in general, or will that waste up my card if im not attempting to take a high quality photo (i.e: flowers, skiing, etc..)?
becuase when i notice on the screen that it has the L/RAW blinking but i check my images on the camera...i only get 1 shot - shouldnt i be getting both a picture of the RAW image and the L .jpg ?
Yea I believe you would get both images with that setting. I don't know about your second question, try asking like 1337 or sheath. They might be able to answer that for you.
getting high quality images is so much more than just shooting raw.
idk what lens you are shooting with but that is a huge part of it, you are going to get way better shots with nice glass than the plastic kit lens.
This/\
now, some more critique?
answer to your second question is you will only see one image when you are viewing using the camera, it just makes it so you dont have two of the same image(how annoying would it be going through photos with duplicates of everyone)
On my camera you really dont have to shoot raw to get amazing pictures its just a compression difference, Raw is not compressed very much at all, and jpeg is basically just a smaller file.
I bet if you put a camera on a tripod and took a raw and jpeg of the same thing you wouldnt be able to see a difference.(remember it may look different because if you changed the picture controls to be vivid the jpeg will be vivid but when shooting Raw all the shooting controls are always default)
This is true. I just shoot with raw because i can fit more pictures on a single card. Im poor and buy literally every piece of my camera equipment, so i get small cards :/
