Why is Shaun White hated?

I Feel like shaun whites hate bandwagon is so huge that its gravitational pull, pulls everyone on.  why is he hated? is it because he is a super competitive dude in a sport whose roots are rebellious, pot smoking ski, skate, and surf bums? Is it jealousy because he gets paid soo much?  Is it because he is the face of snowbaording, and is marketed as the GOAT? 

I am just curious what the actual, specific reasons why people hate him so much are? and why that trait, or example cause you to hate him

he's just a super cocky douche bag. It's not one certain thing... there's tons of things over the years that build up and end up with people not having respect for the guy anymore. Yeah, he throws down real hard, but it's gone to his head in ridiculous ways.

Also on a side note, if shaun played a "mainstream" sport, would his behavior be normal or acceptable?

actually, i bet this kid never met him for more than 10 seconds, if ever.

here's the real reason why.... everyone is fucking jealous of him. whoa, mystery solved!

he's been raised since he could ride a board to be the best. not entirely his choice (i assume), but how many of us could deny the chance to be the best at something? bunch of hypocritical douches are the ones who hate on him. that's not to say i would want his life, though.

The only problem I have with him is that he built a perfect halfpipe and kept it all to himself. It's only fun if friends are around.

I'm not a kid. And yes, I've never met, but I've heard enough stories about him and seen videos of dumb shit he's done and said.

There are way too many incidences that I've read about or seen on video over the years to come up with specific things.

but since people are going to ask for specific things i'll give it a try. I don't remember all of them because I'm not gay for shaun white and I don't care about him, but here are some...

-skodeo7 was filming his feet for generic skate shots at woodward at copper and white freaked out at him to stop filming him.

-he wanted people to stop calling him by the nickname people had given him (the flying tomato) and start calling him a nickname he gave himself "the animal"

-he got a private halfpipe made for himself in the backcountry

those are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head... i'm sure other people could add more if people really want to know.

he treats snowboarding like a job. read his interview with rolling stone. white wants to be a rock star-not a snowboarder. he doesnt care about snowboarding, just the paychecks that roll in from it. the kid lives in southern california for fucks sake, away from any mountains.

basically he just plays the sport for the big payoff, he doesnt care about making nice with the other riders or having fun. i guess it doesnt make him a bad guy,but hes definately not the "core" rider anyone wants to see. he doesnt have the image, the attitude, nothing but skill. id rather he just drop out of the sport and let somebody who truly loves snowboarding take some of those podium finishes, prize money and sponsorship dollars.

jon olson lives in monaco as well as poorboyz living in redondo beach cali. turns out a number of pros live in areas where there is no winter climate as to avoid getting burnt out on the sport.

there goes that little theory... and to see shaun as a core rider just makes you even a bigger retard than you just did.

He said in an interview before the olympics that he isn't really friends with any of the other snowboarders he competes against because he wouldn't want to hang out with someone after they beat him. A lot of people on here have cited that they aren't crazy about him because all he seems to care about is comps, and he does very little filming other than maybe some shots to promote burton.
The dude isn't quite normal and all his fame and money probably accentuated whatever eccentricities that he had.

Monaco is about a 1-2 drive away from some pretty big mountains, and the tax rules for people living there is pretty damn sweet. Which is why a lot of european pro athletes (no matter what kind of sport they do) live there. Helps them save the money they earn now, for the time when they get old and can't live of the sport anymore. Don't get that in SoCal do you?

And what Pierre Luc said about Shaun after X-games, was that he whined over not winning when all he did was a bunch of tricks that full-time skaters did 15 years ago, and that he is in no way trying to progress the sport of skateboarding. Which sounds like a pretty reasonable to me.

I got on a lift with him in Mammoth at the Olympic Qualifiers...Claim. I was working on the half pipe at the time and rode the lift with most of the other Pro's. He was the only one that actually talked to us when we said hi and didn't just listen to their music on the lift. We had a conversation the whole way up the lift and he was very modest and a really good normal bloke. He was very focused during the competition just cutting laps through the park while he waited for his run but it was a pretty serious comp and all amazing athletes are very self driven. I can understand why people don't like him because he is not your typical underground type snowboarder similar to someone like Danny Kass. But don't judge by what some people say.

and on the subject of PLG, i feel like vert (from what i've seen in x-games and shii) hasn't progressed in a super long time. isn't "the 900" still one of the hardest tricks?

He for sure is the biggest doucher around. When I first started snowboarding, I idolized him as a god. As soon as I got sponsored by Burton back in 2005, I started to ride with all the team riders and heard many stories. Last year I was with Keir Dillon at Stratton for the day and he was brought up. He was saying how him and shaun were talking at a comp earlier in the season and Shaun tossed Keir his cell number to have him call and he could fly out and session his private pipe. Only to find out that Shaun had given him a false number. I've ridden with him on a few occasions and he doesn't speak on the lift, and just calls out his tricks down a jump line like a cocky biatch

I think its also the fact that he soaks up the spotlight in events such as the x games and the olympics when us as skiers feel that our sport and our riders are much more deserving.

It all comes back to the ski vs. snowboard rivalry though, but it would be nice to see some skiers with equal or greater talent than shaun get the same recognition and money he does.

I can't tell you why other people hate on him and I don't think anyone can give you an exact answer, only theirs. Why do I not like him? Because people think he is the best snowboarder in the world. Is he the best pipe rider in the world? Yes absolutely. The best snowboarder in the world? No. I also don't like how he treats the sport like a job. Dumont is super competitive but I would rather hang out with him any day over white.

Look the bottom line is he is an insane snowboarder and no one can deny that. the problem with this argument is that everyone who says that they hate him will be considerd jealus of his skill and a lot of his hate is from that. yes he is a little bit strange sometimes and does some things that might seem duechie but he is imprtant for the growth of snowboarding because im shure that many many kids decided to start snowboarding because of seeing him. he keeps the sport relevent and for thata snowboarders should love him. he is very talented and for that he deservs some respect, but he is cocky and he does many things that i dont agree with. Every person on hear has fallen into that catagory in some way its all about what you have heard and seen so it can really go either way.

hes a media attention whore not to mention a ginger all olympic long we heard all about how great shawn whites double cork 10 was in the pipe and then i dont think i saw a single rider that couldnt do that trick hes cocky and he didnt deserve that private halfpipe at breckenridge red bull should have given it to tanner or simon then we could have seen some real proggression

Except shaun white can make red bull a hell of a lot more money than simon or tanner ever could.

Redbull does not give a shit about "progression" all they care about it is money and that is what they are getting with shaun.

but Jon gives back to the industry.
Case and point JOSS and JOI. Which has always been about progressions of the sport, with what's possible with features and what can be done on them.

Shaun uses his sponsors and money to build a private pipe in the middle of nowhere for self progression.

i have personally met em through work and I have driven him around for my job. He has always been polite and nice to me. His mom, however, is a different story. She is pretty much the financial manager of the family and a huge bitch. God I could'nt believe some of the things she said.

I can't speak for others, but my personal reasons for not liking Shaun White is because he gives nothing back to the sport(s) that has given him his life.

Take a look at some ski pros;
Jon Olsson gives back with JOI.
Sammy Carlson gives back this year with SCI
Tom Wallisch does the Wallisch Memorial Jam
Laurent Farve has his own invitational too...


As for skateboarding, in the past Tony Hawk has had the Boom Boom Huck Jam
Rob Dyrdek does the urban skate spots thing....

There's lots of pros in skiing/snowboarding/skateboarding/bmx and pretty much every extreme sport there is that give back in some way to their sport... and if Shaun White has done something to give back to his sport(s), I definitely haven't seen it...

Too add on, I ski at Park City, and every time Shaun White has come to ride there, whether its the park or the pipe, he has it shut down exclusively for him to ride... No other ski or snowboard pro would ever do that, and they probably could if they wanted too...
