Kernel panic?

ok so i just got this error message on my powerbook g4, i know its old but its all i have

I have gotten this same message a few times over the last week or so
my brother who is pretty computer savvy said this is really bad,


so i'm wondering, is it really bad? and is there anything i can do?

yea, thats the first thing i did

i'm not looking to drop a bunch of money on a new computer right now though

that happened to me on my macbook. i took it to an apple store and it ended up being bad RAM and a broken RAM bay. they fixed it for free because it was still under warrantee and now it's fine.

That is probably a kernal panic, I would advise booting into single user mode and then run FSCK.
Steps:
1. Hold the apple and s keys until text runs down the screen
2. Release them once text appears
3. then type "fsck - fy" without the quotations
4. Type reboot

If that isn't the case then your PRAM(Parameter Random Access Memory) probably got corrupted causing your computer to crash. To fix this you need to hold down COMMAND-OPTION-P-R all at once, then wait until you hear the start up chime three times. If this was the problem don't be surprised if your custom settings were lost. Hope that helps!

about a year ago this happened to my MBP. I backed up my files and took it to apple and after a week they couldn't fix it so they gave me the latest generation of my computer. luckily this happened to me while mine was still under warranty...

it might not be hardware? just another option,

"Attempts by the operating system to read an invalid or non-permitted memory address are a common source of kernel panics. A panic may also occur as a result of a hardware failure or a bug in the operating system. In many cases, the operating system could continue operation after memory violations have occurred. However, the system is in an unstable state and rather than risking security breaches and data corruption, the operating system stops to prevent further damage and facilitate diagnosis of the error." -wikipedia

does apple have a way to repair the system files? i dont use macs but thats what you can do on a pc. aka repair installation
