How would you ski bum it after college?

So...2 years from now hopefully I will be sitting with a bachelors degree in computer science.

And i already have to say "fuck the world, i just want to ski" feeling going on. Or I should say...I want to move to where I can ski (real skiing).

So I am thinking, graduate college. Work until fall, buy a tacoma extended cab with a topper. Sleep in the back of the truck / couch surf across the western united states / canada.

Showering as people let me shower, but more or less...finding the place where I want spend a good chunk of my life.

Checking out all the areas, Jackson, Bozeman, Colorado, SLC, Portland, Seattle, Truckee, etc.

Trying to find where I can get a job, have the qualify of life I am looking for, and ski the gnar all day.


But if you were to ski bum a winter across the US (working virtually none mind you, living off from money saved).

How would you do it?

props man... i'm looking to do the same thing,  I am also graduating in 2 years and thinking "fuck the world"  all i want to do is ski and chillax,  this world is bullshit and unless i become a millionaire (which isn't that easy)  i'de rather be a ski bum by winter and a surf bum by summer.

3 years till i graduate, heres my plan:

first 6 months after graduation gonna travel, most likely backpack through Eastern Europe.

after 6 months i have to pay of student loans so ill get a job at a place where i can ski in the winter. once thats done, which shouldn't take long, not gonna have much.

once i have no student loan debt gonna start the ski bum adventure. probably work in the summer, ski all winter.

i moved to CO after undergrad and was a liftie one year and worked with patrol the 2nd, it was a lot of fun until i decided i needed to go to grad school...ugh, stupid

I would become a waiter at a nearby restaraunt.  Work 4-12.  Wake up at 10.  Ski for three hours then go to work.

ill answer for me.
personally i know you can't ski bum forever, eventually your body breaks down or you have an accident that will prevent you from skiing. in this scenario and degree is a great thing to have.

plus going to university/college is a great learning experience about life and yourself.

and i will use my degree to help me get a job in the late spring, summer and fall, that will pay for my winter.

wow dude I am literally in your same exact position. I'm gonna be a junior at UVM and im gonna graduate with a computer science degree in 2 years.

I would totally wanna ski bum it. I actually got lucky though. 3 months ago my parents moved from nj to Colorado. So now I got a house 2 mins away from keystone and tons of other resorts in Summit County.

I'll mostly shack up there after school for a little while and ski to my hearts desires :-)

Lemme know if your ever in Summit!

I did this for 3 years after college. yeah... im oldish.

Anyway, entirely awesome. I think I'm hooked. I'm probably moving back to mammoth in a month or 2 to be a bartender and just do freelance programming on the side.

Unless of course I get this job at 686... then I'll do that.

But it is great. The experience is wonderful. It is really really hard to work next to none though... unless you have money saved. Cause most jobs wont let you work just 10 hours a week... you will need to buy lift tickets... gas to travel around. Start saving now.

Fuck college. Be a lifty at a dope ass resort and get first tracks everyday along with an automatic 40 hours a week and about half of which your skiing. Thats where Im at for now at least.

im going to go to college for vitaculture (sp) the making of beer and wine then open a micro brew in key vail steam boat or evergreen and ski all day and make beer

Im talking be a roaming gypsy skier in the sense.

Most people here talk of locking it down.

I want to see it all, and see the areas around it. Like go on a life journey to see...hey I want to make a living, I have this degree; these are my interests, here are my hobbies, where can i spend the next portion of my life at (working the grind...and trying to ski instead of...skiing everyday and avoiding the grind because i am debt free and 1/2 way done with college and at this pace will be debt free still at the end)

So I want to yeah, travel to Whistler, revelstoke, fernie, kicking horse, truckee to and tahoe and everything down to mammoth and then on over to maybe taos even just to see what its like. then head on up to SLC and check out the terrain there, continue north while im at it to idaho, then over to montana, then down to colorado, pacific northwest. Just the whole 9 yards of skiing in north america. Once I have seen "all that there is to be seen", cities and skiing....

I would consider where the jobs are, what the property costs are, and accessibility to ski areas and so on. We all know some of the most obvious choices, SLC, Seattle, Denver....but theres more to it than just that. And still,

Spend the entire winter, finding places to ski and sleep on the budget. Living in the back of a truck or subaru.

How many times will you have this kind of freedom? Some might say this is just when to find that job and get off the fun kick. I say fuck that, its just 5 solid months of skiing at best in North America.



The only downside to my whole scheme is the cost of lift passes....if I want to ski all these places...just in lift tickets alone....good god lol. Don't even think of gas, weed, beer, or food. Just lift tickts.

I was a ski bum after highschool. I saved up around 3,000, got a job as a snow maker over the phone, and then lucked out and found a place to stay. There’s plenty of jobs in mountain towns, but not that many places to stay. Unfortunately I broke my collarbone my 5th day skiing. I lost my job, but I was able to coast by on the money I had for a few months. Ski bumming is honestly harder than it seems. Shit got really tiring and I got burned out on skiing. I did a bunch of trade work for a while and then decided that also wasn’t for me. Now I’m in college and work part time on a goat farm.

Yeah you're right. Just because I'm taking a year off to ski a ton means I won't work an engineering job ever. I've got two years of internships under my belt, a good resume, and want a break to ski a ton before entering the workforce. Fuck me right?
