To anyone who follows the stock market

my dad told me i have 30 shares in disney stock, which is now spending money, and I want to invest it somewhere. What are some good stocks that are A) doing well at the present, and B) that are good long term stocks. I am very new to the stock market and I figured there must be some experienced stock holders on this site, so consider yourself my advisors. thanks

Ha. I have a friend who invested in K2... or at least the conglomerate that owns it...

he made like 5 bucks on every share he had after about a month last year. pretty legit.

BP is still rising for sure. that is definately an option.

Also, is the 4g going to be enabled for Verizon and/or T-Mobile soon? Cuz if so, then those two companies will see a huge stock jump

Let's see so far we have had about 7 different industries in which people think you should invest. Everyone is throwing out ticker symbols and offering no basis as to why you should invest in that company. Unless you do research into what makes a good investment and set goals that you hope to achieve from investing OP, you aren't going to get too far in the market.

You offered no basis for us to go off of, such as how much risk you are willing to take on and offered no real reason for jumping out of disney which isn't a bad investment to own right now.

If you have 30 shares of disney you probably have around $900, throw in another $100 of your own money and buy a bond.

maybe? ok thanks for the advice I may or may not buy a bond. I am actually sort of leaning toward cisco because my parents have stock in them and they look pretty reliable

if you are not that informed, but still want to hit the stock market, go for a company you like (a skiing company, biking, surfing, whatever), so you have some kind of imagined benefit just by being a co-owner, if you know what i mean.

but seriously, inform yourself about the market, about how/where you can order efficiently (=cheap), etc before doing anything looking remotely like investing in stocks.

OR, you could buy one stock from a dozen big companies or so and hit the yearly, mandatory meetings (=free food & drinks).

If you only have $950 to play with then I would start by saving $940 of it in a regular account and spending the other $10 on a book that outlines how trading works.

Learn about CD's, mutual funds, stocks, how brokerage accounts work, etc.  Then don't come back to NS to look for financial advice.

Start readin some books about daytrading, follow some trends and for a few weeks do "pretend" trading. pick a stock at a point ud go into it, "buy" there and then "sell" when u want to.. just play around but dont put any money into it till you feel comfortable losing it lol..

Learn to be comfortable losing money..

well i would ideally want to keep money in stocks until I really need the money, i.e. when I buy a car, or need a plane ticket, or if something big comes up in the next year where ill need the money. I dont know what the overarching term for all the above is tho haha

i dont think the kids looking to day trade, but if he was it is very possible to day trade on $900. Theres a few great trading programs out there built around $1000 invested. You'd better be a chart reading wiz tho.

I meant to quote the kid who told him to read into day trading. This is a ridiculous suggestion for OP as he clearly isn't very knowledgeable on the subject. There are very few people skilled enough to be day traders and on $900 dollars it is not even close to this kids best option.

I know it wont be the cult with the highest amount of members but i think there are enough people on here that can speak intelligently about it. im sure there are a few business owners, finance majors and accountants other than myself on here.

Not a joke..

What's wrong with these picks?  You must not be a believer in the global recovery, China's soft landing (copper - FCX), emerging markets' insatiable need for crop yield (phosphates, nitrates - MON and MOS - would recommend POT but limited upside at this point), and the monetization of debt (gold - GLD, miners - ABX is completely unhedged to the price of gold).  These themes have worked recently and will continue to work over the long term.

Regarding OP's asset allocation, assuming he's young, he wants to take on significant more risk than an older investor, thus focusing on capital appreciation in stocks rather than capital preservation (bonds). If he's risk averse for some reason, I would look into high yielding stocks.  Check out Verizon (VZ) - yields 6.5%

not at all a believer in a global recovery in the near future. im a bear. rawr. i guess it depends how long he plans on letting these sit, but i think of everything from a swing trading standpoint and none of those are tickers id touch in the short term. long term, maybe, but id have to do my research before i commented.

If you have a decent amount of money to invest, I would recommend buying either Google or Apple stocks. Both are pretty pricey but you can make a good amount of money off of them.
