Play what you like, and something you can do with guitar, bass and drums. If you want to play ska or something get some more members, or if you like who you have play something like rock, alternative, punk, ore whatnot. Its up to you man. yeah just look for little bars and coffeehouse to play. You can also try to join contest like battle of the bands and such.

you should really write first, covers start to really suck once you've got some (not all) stuff of your own then you should go look for gigs

find old obscure songs.... like Led Zeppelin B-sides. play stuff like that. Women will bow down to you.... even if they are 40+ years old.

ya man. i've been spinning out since i was 9 (no joke) at parties and stuff ( dj'ing that is ) and its so hard to market. like now i've got a big business, and like yellow pages is so expensive and i live in a real small town and all. so like just word of mouth, business cards, local newspapers. try to do school stuff if your still in school. and like volunteer for stuff, dont expect to get paid at the beginning.

Go to middle school. Or failing that, go to a local music shop, buy a used one, buy some reeds, and pick up a music lesson book. It's pretty easy to learn, although I'm not sure why you would want to.

the sax is really fun if you get good, get a stiff plastic reed, none of that wood crap, plastic lasts forever, it is a little hard to play at first but it sounds a lot better. Although I would not recommend learning on a stiff reed.

If you really want to make money, stay away from hard rock- this will get you nowhere on a small scale unless you have a following of women that.... well, follow you. The best way to make money as a band, unfortunately for some, is to be a background band, so you can market yourself for banquets, weddings, birthday parties, etc. You can save your hard stuff for clubs or whatever. If you develop your softer side and use word of mouth and your personal connections to find gigs, then you can do quite well. At one point with my jazz band I was making fifty bucks plus a weekend.

i play the guitar and piano
yeah it's key to be able to play variety
that way you can actually make a bit of $$ playing at events where they usually like to have live music.

I said why would you want to play sax because when I did, it was in a school jazz band, and the director was frickin insane and really mean, so I quit, and did not have a lot of fun. If you're doing it with friends in your own band it would be pretty cool.

Jazz is totally the way to go, and God, it's so much fun to play. I studied with Brent Jensen at CSI for 2 years, learned all the classics... and man, when you sit down at a gig and bust out Take Five, or Freddie Freeloader, or CHAMELEON! the best song ever, man the money just rolls in.

If you live in Vancouver, you could play at NightShift in Richmond. Call them up.
