Deinterlacing HDV

My friend sent me some clips filmed on his sony camera that I believe shoots HDV. The clips he sent are interlaced and I can't figure out how to fix it so that the crappy looking lines disappear. I've never worked with HDV/interlaced footage before, I edit with Final Cut Pro and After Effects.

Here is a screen grab of what the footage looks like, I'm hoping to figure out a way to make it more crisp looking.

Okay. It's interlaced because the footage was shot in fields, or half frames, instead of full frames. I won't go on because you probably know this.

Anyway, when you edit the footage those lines shouldn't be a problem. However, when you export, there should be an option somewhere to "deinterlace" your footage. I don't work with FCP yet, so I can't tell you exactly, but it should be somewhere in your export settings. On Premiere Pro, its just a checkbox.

You serious? Because it should. That's what deinterlacing is - squeezing those two half frames into one full frame and getting rid of the lines. Hmmm PM someone who works with FCP to make sure you're not clicking something different.

When exporting, under the compression settings, click the "size" tab, there is a checkbox for deinterlacing there.

I have tried that many times and it hasn't been doing anything for me, I can't figure out why. I've also tried doing it in After Effects, but the lines are still there.

Just opened up Final Cut and grabbed a screen shot to clarify. The windows are left to right in the order they are clicked.

Done that but it hasn't helped, I'm sure what else to try... Thanks for all the effort helping though.

Hmm, that's odd. There is also a de-interlace filter - maybe try applying the filter to everything in the sequence and then export.

I've tried that already as well, I also tried both the filter and de-interlace in the compression settings together, neither worked for me.

Deinterlacing in FCP/AP generally sucks. Open it in Cinema Tools (or a PC analogous) and do a reverse/inverse telecine. The computer will then recognize and play it back as 30p.

Thanks for all the replys, I've tried everything mentioned and nothing seems to work... I may not have executed the Reverse telecine properly, I selected 1st field only as opposed to first and second.

Nah - while I don't know anything about that method, you should probably have to select both fields, because it takes 2 fields to make a full frame. Maybe try it with both.

I didn't capture the footage personally, the shots were sent to me by a friend using mediafire.com
