Welfare in Canada isn't a federal issue, its set up by the provinces (states) then handled by the municipalities. If you live in the city you get more (higher living expenses). Generally, its just enough to pay for rent, and food, and maybe a little spending money. I'd like to see it get reformed to "direct to landlord" checks and food stamps only. You also get more if you need prescriptions or have kids. It a shitty situation with kids because half the time the parents blow it but you can't exactly cut them off.
As for health care. Its not reallyyyy government managed. They have a hand in it (capping doctors salaries at 650k), and setting up the hopsitals, but its a "single payer program" This means doctors are private businessmen that have the own practise and run their own business, and then when you go to see them its charged to the government (single payer). I'm 90% sure the cost per person is lower, since their isn't a corporation making a profit. It would be like your hopsitals being run by charities and churches like they were in the 60's (which btw no one complained about).
America has great health care, so I'm not trying to start a war. However, having an HMO whose job it is to pay for as little as your shit as possible just seems like a dysfunctional system to me. But each to their own. As canadians, we generally like our system here. Everyone gets care.
Well, no one said it was free. It comes out of taxes, fees, etc.
I think where I live you get about $530. $350 for rent (max), and $180 for food, etc.
oh ya, I forgot freedom of free speech was exclusively American.
Fuckk so jealous.
