Water contaminated, no warning?!?

I live in a small mountain town and I just now heard that the tap water is possibly contaminated with e coli! What the hell! I had not heard of this until about an hour ago and even then it wasn't through the city or anything official like that. It seems like a reverse 911 or something should be in place? Shits not right
