I hear way to many flipping out about obama and other politicians agreeing to a mosque near ground zero, well here is the deal

I, personally, think its like a slap in the face, its disrespectful to put a mosque there. i live in NY and this whole terrorist situation has been lingering in the air since 9/11...


But on paper... on paper, it looks TERRIBLE to deny these people a mosque... just because they are muslim, doesnt mean they dont get the freedoms that the US grants them.

i think a mosque is a terrible idea, but i hate all these ignorant people flipping out at obama and local politicians for supporting it
because, in reality, they have to....

I think you miss my point.

Most Americans OF THE TIME of WWII were generally Catholic or very Christian. Japan, was not and still is not.

Now, the terrorists that attacked the US WERE Muslim correct? The US while being very diverse doesn't exactly have a GIGANTIC Muslim population percentage wise does it?

there's a difference between freely worshiping, and freely worshiping in a respectful, tasteful manner.

i'm not against building a mosque, but to build it so close to where thousands of americans were killed by radical believers in that religion is a classless, tasteless way to do it. They can build it anywhere in nyc. Just not right down the block.

and if they do go ahead and build it, they need to do a damn good job of showing that those people who hijacked those planes are far from the majority.

The building and property they bought have pieces from the South Tower and the plane that hit the South Tower still embedded in it.

These 2 blocks are not gigantic blocks.

I never said take them away. But those who share the religion of the offending group should take into consideration the feelings of those near the site of an attack. The Japanese, yes, built a cultural center in Hawaii on the same island as Pearl Harbor... but it's on the complete opposite side of the island. The Christian churches in Hiroshima are a good 5-10 miles away from the site of the blast. Nagasaki had a Cathedral built in it because for a long time Nagasaki was home to the very small minority of Japanese that are Christians.



It's one of those situations where this Imam wants to promote tolerance of the moderate Muslim. Well, part of being a moderate is to be willing to compromise and be understanding of others feelings when they don't want you in a specific area because of the way they feel rubbed the wrong way. Nuns wanted to build a convent right next to Auschwitz sometime after WWII, the Pope told them no. Wanna know the reasoning? While a convent in itself is not in any way offensive that area is a place of extreme sadness to Jews and they should be let to have what they wish in that area and not have others move in. This Imam should take a hint from the Pope. Move the Mosque like a mile down the road and no one would have any issues with it and there would be no news story from this.



And just because you have no say doesn't mean you can't have an opinion.

you guys are all talking shit about muslims and the islamic religion but think about this : Hundreds of thousands of people died in the christian crusades. you guys dont bitch about those. they built cathedrals after they destroyed cities. Not all muslims are muslim extremists. Just because they want to build a mosque there it doesnt mean they are trying to rub it in.

Am I the only one who's not in any way offended that some muslims are setting a mosque in the neighborhood near ground zero?

You guys know there are probably about 18 or 19 christian churches down there right? Including at least one that's been there for like 300+ years? Look up Trinity church...
there's probably a scientology centre and some synagogues and many other spots where different people of different religions come to chill and do what they do...



Yet, because of 911, everyone associates muslims with terrorists now, so lets tell them they cant build a mosque in downtown New York because we are a bunch of pussbag idiots who bitch about non-issues...

I'm not muslim by any means, I dont have any close muslim friends, and in fact, I think the whole religion is downright freakin wacky, but you guys need to get real here...

Both my parents are from Iran, so tech were muslim but we don't practice any aspects of the religion. However my parents, and our other middle eastern friends think its a terrible idea. Its like building a temple next to concentration camp. So stupid.

Actually they do, the Greek Orthodox has been trying to rebuilt its church for 9 years no, but has been caught up in the NY bureaucracy and red tape. But all the race card carrying minorityphiles don't care about that and have fast forwarded this mosque to show how tolerant we are...

and DingoSean, they ARE trying to stir up trouble. The governor of NY offered them a FREE spot of land elsewhere. The mosque is going to cost $100m, so you'd think (unless the project organizers are financially retard, OR [b] are trying to make a point) [/b] that they would try to cut costs a little.

But come on guys I'm going to build an American Victory Center at My Lai and open it on March 16th. Who's with me?

i'm all for equality and respect for other's beliefs but sometimes you try to coddle and be sensitive and accomdating to other cultures so much so that you end up doing something 10X more offensive to another (and frankly, probably larger) group of people when it really wasn't all that necessary in the first place. 

it's one of those situations that just makes you say "ok, come on. really?"

It would be ridiculous for the government to block the mosque, but this will be a good opportunity for the NYC pussy ass poser citizens to step up. What if the people who carried out 911 were Christian? or Jewish? or Hindu or something? Would any of you be doing/thinking the same thing? Think about it...

What if this was a crazy ass group of Christians who were pissed off because they thought NY was were all the jews and muslims lived and they wanted to kill them by blowing up some buildings... Would we be tearing down christian churches and would there be people renouncing such a religion on the basis of that?


Also... who in here thinks theres nobody out there who would pull a Timothy McVeigh if they had the ability? You'd be damned wrong if you think there are not wackos that actually praise that situation just because they think they were rubbed the wrong way by the government.

2,740 Americans died in the 9/11 attack.
Ground Zero should be a memorial to those who lost their lives on that terrible day. I'm sure many Muslims who died in that event, but that doesn't make them a priority in this situation. Why should they be able to make a mosque there and we cant make a church or temple. Our freedom is slowly getting revoked.

There was I believe a Greek Orthodox Church destroyed in the attacks (when the buildings fell or something) that they have been trying to rebuild for 9 years... still haven't gotten it approved.

After a bit of reading it seems like the greek orthodox church doesn't want to/can't afford to rebuild. They have only raised 2 million dollars for a $20-40mill project. The city tried to make a deal with them to pay for and build another bigger better church elsewhere, but it fell through. The port authority says that St. Nicholas is free to rebuild the church on its own parcel at the original site. Looks like it's just poor and greedy greeks halting the rebuild.

A mosque is a place of worship and prayer, no matter what you say. An "american victory center" would just be a place bragging about a victory. Its more like wanting to build a church, temple, or a mosque for that matter in Mei Lei (sp?). Sounds less retarded doesnt it?

There was a needless slaughter of innocent men, women, and children in both locations. Your probably going to argue that Mei Lei had nothing to do with religion where as 9/11 did. Blaming 9/11 on muslims as a whole is like blaming Protestants (?, youll have to forgive my possible ignorance on that one) as a whole for something the westboro baptist church does.
