you wouldn't be referring to all the repeated shots, and the shots that he put in opposite so it looked like they were spinning both ways?





to answer the question of the thread, I would say I don't miss the depth of the talent pool.

three or four ski videos full of the same skiers, usually with the same shots, or the same trick, just from a different angle.

What I loved about old ski movies?

1-the poor quality video, with sick tricks. I loved the innovation, the sickest iron crosses on off axis tricks, but the poor quality showed it was done by passion, not money.
2-the soundtracks. It was a hit or miss thing, nobody knew where to start, or even knew where it was going. I missed JF Cusson's or JP Auclair's old segments. There was so much imagination because they started with the love of punk music...to break away from a mold. (newschool was illegal back then)
3-The community. I loved shots with 100 people in it cheering the riders on. Something like the last segment in ski movie 2, when a guy threw an ill cork 7 with a double jointed tail grab, then filmed a kid having his mind blown out of proportion. Now, its all about the image, not about having fun together.
4-The old technology. Remember the first 1080s, the yellow and black prototype? Those skis were impossible to handle, but guys were still doing amazing things with them. It shows the talent out there.
5-the dare devil look. These guys looked like they had found a way to make everything crazy, a reputation they never lived up to, but showed in the movies. Now, all I see on movies it nothing, skiing, party and getting high (ok maybe not, but you get the point)
6- the uniqueness. Every movie was so different. the spots, the skiers, the tricks, the music, everything was different. Today, every segment is rap or hip hop with the same tricks trying to imitate another rider's style.

On second though, I dont really care for the ski movies after session 1242. Everything after that got so artsy, a 6 minute segment included 4 minutes of scenery shots while the skiing part wasnt so interesting.

This. If L1P's realtime and Poorboyz Idea as old. Then i guess i can contribute. I'm going to be completely honest. I've only seen 1 maybe 2 movies that have topped those. Chaoz Shoot me definitely did. But I loved the creativity in the older movies. Realtime has my favorite, still to date, powder segment. I'll never forget the epic pow trip they had in Japan. Idea was ill in a different way. mainly pow freeskiers shreding big jumps with pow skis. I thought it was sick.

I really don't miss how replicable every ski movie was, because there wasn't much money, anyone could go out and find some talented skiers and start out a company that could make sick movies, I like that it happened so that companies like Rage and Meathead could come in and make movies that were equally as good as the pros, but I prefer it now, where you can come in as an amateur filmer, start your stuff up, then you have to prove yourself like 4bi9 and stept are doing. It's like having the minor league.

weird style....

these days style is one of the most important things a pro-skier must have, i just love when they make it look so easy...

in the old days they'd huck gnarly stuff, much respect for that, but sometimes i find it a shame they don't ride away clean...
(may also be because in the old movies they had to make a film with much less footage than they shoot nowadays, more footage = more chance of clean stomped tricks on tape ....)

I love old ski movies. I watch a lot of them. I figured since theres a "Things You Miss About Old Ski Movies Thread" there should be one for things that weren't so great.

Mostly the music, although I hate Cali P and electronic.
