Today a few friends and myself went to a pretty well known cliff jumping spot in North Vancouver called Lynn Canyon. Lynn is pretty infamous for deaths due to the pools people jump into. A lot of the landing pools have mad undertow and hidden caves that people get sucked into. There has been 1 death earlier this summer, but by August water levels are usually low enough that undertow isn't much of a problem.
The main circuit has been deemed safe for the year by locals, so they've been going pretty wild the last 2 days I've been there. Especially today, so at the end of the day when I was walking out I decided to check and see if anyone was hucking Gateway, a huge cliff that is apparently 130 feet. (The last cliff in the vimeo vid linked below.) Right away I see 2 locals send it completely fine. That's when a spectator (who did not look or sound local) hopped over the fence and started sizing this thing up. His friends immediately start saying "Ronnie don't fucking do this, you're shitfaced, you're way too drunk to do this." So he asks me and my friends what we think, we all say "if you're drunk, this isn't a good idea." He turns around, ignoring everybody, chucks up some horns to the guys below and jumps. Shitty take-off right away, he barely clears the rocks 50+ feet below, ends up in a sitting down/lying back position and hits the water. He didn't resurface (at this point I was sure he was dead) and everybody around the pool of water he hit jumps right in looking for him. Eventually, probably really only 30 seconds later, someone pulled him out. The guy was conscious but his shoulder looked dislocated and he could barely walk. As me and my friends were on the bus back an ambulance and fire-truck were ripping towards the canyon, but a heli will most likely be needed as where he is the only way out is a mandatory 30 foot waterfall.
