Texts on a computer/ipod touch?

NS. I come to you in a dire need for a friend. He has no phone anymore because his parents took it. Now this is where you come in. Is there a free,(free) program that will let him send/receive texts on a computer or a ipod touch?

text plus - for ipod in appstore
its free and unlimited texting
he just needs wifi
he can use google to find one for computer but it mostly just uses email
the ipod one is legit, i use it when my phone dies or like im too lazy, or now when its broken

You sure it works with everything? I have heard it only works with other people who use text plus.

i know theres a plug in for firefox that lets you send texts.  not sure if you can receive them though.  i'll do some digging and find out.

Yes Textplus is probably the best. Entirely free, works like a charm. Def the best option out there!

i dont know if this is what my friend used, but he was in Norway for a month and couldnt text out of the country, so he used this and could receive texts over wifi on his iphone. it would work with any computer basically

OK, so apparently his parents are batshit insane when they ground him and took all music devices from his room. Anyone know of a good comp program that does the same thing. I have googled but dont know if anything is legit.

i text my girl on it all the time and it works great, plus its threaded, like iphone texting, which i personnally like
i have actually only texted peoples cells, not another text plus.
but to clarify, its free, unlimited, and works great

sorry to dub post, but the only thing i know runs through email
you can use it, but its pretty tedious and annoying
he could try a tracfone if hes got a little extra cash, they have them at most grocery stores

you can send/receive texts from any email client. All his friends have to do is send the texts to his email address (if he sends them one first, they can just hit reply). To send them to people it depends on the carrier:

AT&T phonenumber@txt.att.net
T-Mobile phonenumber@tmomail.net
Verizon phonenumber@vtext.com
Sprint phonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com

Also, If he uses AIM, hey can just type +1 and then the phone number (without spaces) in place of a screen name to send them a text, and when they reply it'll show up as an IM

you can text people through AIM. just add a +1 before the persons number before and you can put them in your list. yea i know, a little old school but it works.

You need a phone to get started using it, but he could just use his homephone number and then disable that right away, then he could send and receive texts from it online.

On computers you can always use www.textem.com but for the iTouch I don't know I don't have one (yet).
