The real question here is whether Che would be able to enjoy a burrito with Stalin what with all these turban wearing cholos running around.

And for some reason I can see my dad becoming Clint's character.

This thread is like a microcosm of a bigger issue. I spent a good 30 minutes constructing one of my most involved posts in a long time complete with figures for good perspective, and this page is almost nothing but name calling and references to the stereotypes of Gran Torino (which I did think was a good movie). I may just be frustrated but it seems like almost nothing im reading here is worth a damn. Why not just accept that some fringe members of all different types of people make some stereotypes come true. I choose to leave it at that, that works for me.

Actually I did read it in it's entirety earlier this evening. I just went back and skimmed and yea I thought you had some pretty good ideas and I agreed with a good majority of it. I think I said "most" of what I was reading was meaningless or whatever word I chose. If I didn't include the "most" part then that's my fault.

Okay. That totally cleared things up. I agree with you on doing something about the businesses hiring them. My dad and I have been talking about that for awhile now. Maybe a tax to all the hotels, farmers, construction companies, etc. that hire illegals. Then after the tax thy aren't so cheap anymore. It seems like that would be kind of tough to control, but who knows. The big issue is: who will take their job? Americans are too lazy to get out and pick crops, frame houses, and clean hotel rooms. It's a tough issue. Very tough.

And that issue isn't something the federal government should be handling because they have been fucking it up and blowing off CA, AZ, NM, and TX for decades. Illegal immigration is very real, but the Feds don't really seem to think so and all the other states seem to think it is discriminatory to not let an illegal alien live in the country. They are illegal. Is it that hard to wrap your head around the concept? Pull your head out of your ass, the law is not discriminatory, it is not what the media says it is, and I see it as a shout to the Feds asking for a little assistance.

Some guy was trying to get me to sign a petition to make Bellingham a sanctuary city for illegals. I laughed at his face.

I sat there, laughed, and then asked him if Argentina would set up a sanctuary city for me an around 1million of my countrymen if we showed up illegally... he asked me what Argentina had anything to do with it and said they spoke Portuguese....

I know the argument has moved on a bit, but this is totally not the answer. If anyone truly, honestly feels this way, I feel very bad for them.

Panda, I really want to call BS on that, but I can't because there really are people out there that dumb. Haha. People are so lost. I really still find it hard to believe that when people argue on the side of illegal immigration, they say the country was found on immigration. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe those immigrants were all legal. In the potato famine, Ellis Island was filled with Irish trying to gain a US citizenship. I would have no problem with the immigrants if they were legal.

Yeah... sorry dude. You're wrong lol.
There was tons of illegal immigration that happened... ships would head towards smarller port towns near NY and Boston where they were more likely to be brought in, and a whole host of other methods were obtained...
people would get a citizenship (which wouldnt take long back then) and then go back and grab the rest of their families to come here... happened all the time...

And if anyone is truly for taking away that right, they should look to their own past.
Not that it would ever happen, but say the 14th was repealed or whatever. How many American citizens would no longer be considered citizens? My father? I don't know, possibly. I assume my grandfather came over legally, but I don't know.

Okay. I had a feeling I was wrong. Haven't had much US History education. That's coming up this school year, haha. It's too bad they make it so tough to get a citizenship now. I know most Americans could never pass the test, myself included.

Comparing now to whenever my ancestors came here is just stupid.
But maybe you family came here 10 years ago.

but the plain fact that neighter immigration wave was legal is the same.
if mexico was populated by white christians speaking english, NOONE would care.

Whoa, I guess my comment took this thread to left field.
My point was this: If the 14th is repealed (which it won't be, I'm just speaking hypothetically) the number of American citizens would drop significantly because people (such as my father) MAY not be considered citizens because they were children of illegal (a good possibility) immigrants.

I'm still confused by this statement though, where were you guys going with this?

o some guy just said its the same now as it was then.
I understand what you mean by repealing the 14th. My best friends dad is a scottish immigrant.
What we should do go borderline isolationism and build a big ass wall with one gate for oil and one gate for china.

if they were illegal and the country was at war, i can bet you we would still care. you're just trying to turn it into a race issue when its not, you fucking racist.

Pretty sure my grandmother's family and grandfather's family coming through Ellis Island and my mom getting a Green Card before she got married to my dad and moved here is perfectly legal.
And it doesn't matter that they AREN'T white Christians. If you intend to live here go through the official channels.

In your instances, yes - but how many immigrants went undocumented through Ellis Island? I'd guess thousands.

Have you ever been there? I haven't but my dad has and he said with how the island was set up (the processing center)... unless you were like 6 and got lost it would probably be impossible to get past the desk where you registered. And even then they had police officers walking around to find lost children (my grandma got lost and this big Irish Police officer gave her a banana and helped her find her parents)

yeah but still it was a way different time then and comparing it to today is not only useless but incredibly stupid.

I still don't get where you are going with the "different time period" thing.
Say my grandfather magically got through his immigration checkpoint, moved to MA and started a restaurant and had kids. Now, 70 something years later, it comes to light he was illegal and the 14th amendment granting citizenship to my father is no longer a right (thanks, TP).
How is that situation ANY different than an illegal Mexican worker who has lived here for 12 years after overstaying their visa, had a couple children, and is now in danger of being deported?
If you're born in this country, you're a citizen.

I disagree.
Problem is there have been kids born here to parents that were here on vacation and shit. Should they be American citizens?
Honestly, the 14th Amendment was written so fast after the Civil War that it's wording is really REALLY vague.

fuck that. you know how many people would cross the border just to give birth then leave their kids here?
