Hey Guys. I need some advice. I need to get a new phone because mine is about to shit the bed. I really wanted to get one of the new android phones but my dad says I can't get one because the data plans you need to get for them are insanly expensive. Since he still foots the bill for this I can't really argue.
Can anybody suggest me a phone that they like that doesn't require a data plan and is still relatively newish? I know without a data plan my options are very limited but since I'm kinda a tech geek I would like something cool and not just the standard flip phone.
Thanks
dude are you working? If so, pay the 30 bucks a month for the data plan. The droids are worth it. I just got the droid x and I've played with a lot of droids and owned many of them but this one blows them out of the water. I've also played with an iPhone a lot too and I believe the droid X beats it.
Fuck verizon. I was just in there the other day because i was due for an upgrade and pretty much every new phone requires that shit data package which is only a title they made so they could charge more money on pretty much every plan.
I ended up getting the samsung reality. It has a $10 data plan but its not as bad as others and they phone was free. its pretty sick for a free phone.
The data plans are actually government regulated so everything you said about them being "a title so they could charge extra money" is completely wrong.
yeah that's a good point, unless you really want the smratphone for work, like i have my work email set up with it so i can keep up on my shit out of the office. The data plan is expensive if all you want to do is facebook and the occasional website browse...and if so just get the $10 plan.
Agreed. I got the enV touch like a year and a half ago and i regret it. It dies like everyday if i text. my friend got the env 3 and it holds more texts than the touch and has a longer battery life. pretty much the touch screen is a gimmick
yeah dude the env3 was my inbetween phone and that thing held a charge for like 3 days...my droid might get a day and a half but i constnatly have it running through email or glued to my ear making calls so it comes with the teritory.
Smartphones are supposed to be more than phones. It is supposed to be a pda with a phone as well. I can honestly say that my htc incredible is everything i have ever wanted in a phone. It puts your ipod, phone, calendar, web browser, etc... all into one device. If you use it for more than a phone, it is totally worth it, but if you are just going to use it as a phone, dont buy one.
Dude, you're not gonna get around a data plan. Verizon now requires one for all smart phones and all multimedia level phones. So enV 3/touch are out. Chocolate is out. You can either get a dumbphone (a flip phone basically--all the free ones) or get a data plan.
With data plan, get either the Droid X or the Droid 2. Both are outstanding phones.
I had one, its slow as shit, when it like overloads (receiving a phone call while texting or anything like that) it just shuts down and restarts, and it gives you the wrong name on texts (lets say im texting two people at the same time, it will pop up saying "new text from mike" and then i will read it and realize it was from bill....)
now i thought my phone was fucked up, so i got a warranty.
well they next one did the same thing.
so i sent it back
and now this one is doing the same thing.
after two returns, i can get a completely different phone. I think im going for the casio exilim.
at&t has a two year exclusive contract with Apple on all new products they put out...they said the 3G and 3Gs were coming in for months and they were just rumors back then too. iphones can't be converted to a CDMA network because of tech issues that only a simcard system could handle, otherwise apple would have used Verizon to begin with (wired.com talked about that when it first came out).
thanks for the suggestions guys. I didn't realize that pretty much every phone needed a data plan. Thats such horseshit. Yes I am working btw but I would still like to avoid all possible expenses cause I know I'm gonna run out of money during the school year and once again be a broke college student.
What phones have the 10 dollar plan and are pretty good? Would that be something like the env3?
anything really but the smart phones like the htc, blackberry etc. some samsung and lg phones are also smartphones as well as some of the motorola phones.
I loved the env3, my girlfirend has the samsung rogue and that's a nice phone too. LG phones take a beating and hold charges forever and they are generally functional and stylish as their company is excellent at design.
don't listen to this guy because he is an idiot. the droid eris is a TERRIBLE PHONE. if u wanted to get a droid get the droid 2 or the droid incredible
This. I have an env 3, and it's perfect for me. I mean all the bells and whistles would be nice, but I don't think that it's worth the money because I don't NEED it.
But the env 3 is a solid phone, nothing special but it's easy to text on, uhh good battery life and seems to be pretty durable. That's just my experience though.
whatever you do don't get the samsung rogue, i have it and is a complete piece of shit, its bulky, heavy, slow, and the touch screen is fucked up, i miss my lg vx9400
