Does it matter if God exists? As someone who is 99% atheist, if I was wrong, would it matter?
Let's say there is a supremely powerful being who created the universe, would I want to worship it? It created a whole host of misery and based a lot of the experience of life from the simplest organism to humans on pain, suffering and loss.
Let's take the example that happens every day of a baby born and never know anything than a few brief minutes of struggling and gasping for air. Why would I want to praise the being responsible for that? Why should I get on my knees to a monster capable of doing something like that. Seriously, if this supreme being exists, I'm not impressed and not going to worship it. The main reason that I can see for someone worshipping god is to curry some kind of favor in an imaginary afterlife, but that's a bit like being a collaborator in my view.
Let's say I'm just not smart enough to understand the supreme being's plan, and God is really cool, but the only way it can make the universe work is by suffocating babies. Why would it want to need to be worshipped? How up it's own ass would it have to be to want people to spend days clapping hands and singing songs to it?
Has God made much effort to show us it exists? As soon as we got technology, God stopped making personal appearances. It's made it clear that it's not interested in us any more, all the holy books were written long before video cameras were invented. The miracles dried up long ago, if God really wanted worshippers he could make a single appearance on Oprah and convert billions of people in one fell swoop. Why doesn't it do this? Perhaps it's because it's just not interested any more and really would rather we all forgot about it.
Does it matter if god exists? Is there any point in worshipping it if it does? Discuss.
