Why Wal-Mart is good

I'm throwing together a bullshit presentation on the good of walmart. So far my points are:

Utilitarianism- greatest good for greatest number. meaning that if more people benefit than suffer its good.

free market- wal-mart is better than your store- you lose.

and something about wal-mart giving back or something

I know a lot of people hate wal-mart, but i've got to give a persuasive speech on a controversial topic and this is all i've come up with. let me know if you've got any good points to add to this, or what some of the arguements against walmart being bad are or something. i could use some help with this since its exam time and i'm mentally exhausted.

also, if you happen to have any ideas for some kind of visual- video/picture whatever. let me know.

not sure if youre trolling but yep, they hired my schizophrenic aunt to water the plants there. she couldn't take it though. but if a place can afford to hire people that normal stores wouldn't hire, that's good, I think.
not like I support walmart or anything though

^thats one article of many recently showing how WalMart is helping local farmers and in many cases getting farms to restart growing produce they had stopped growing.

They offer a wide spectrum of products at an incredibly competitive rate.

They employ ridiculous amounts of people at nearly every level. (Yeah some people freak out about wages, but right now many are lucky to have a job, period.)

Investing into organic farms - I can't remember the article, but I think it came from MSN.com's homepage. They did a side by side taste test with a bunch of food critics over organic produce, one test sample coming from WalMart and the other from Whole Foods, the results came back a 50/50 tie. Bottom line is it is a quality product and they are encouraging more farms to go organic.


If you just search WalMart and scan through the results, there is plenty of info to find.

Wal-Mart has done remarkable things for the environment.


Because of their constant desire for the most efficient and cost effective strategies, they have helped transform the packaging industry. Before Wal-Mart, deodorant came in cardboard boxes. Wal-Mart said "You can fit more sticks of deodorant on the truck without boxes, lose the cardboard". Companies obviously did what Wal-Mart said, and deodorants no longer come in boxes - saving millions of trees a year.

Further, Wal-Mart was one of the first responders to New Orleans after Katrina. Wal-Mart has done some pretty incredible things due to their desire for efficiency.

Of course, don't take my word for it - do some research to back up my claims!

I call bullshit on walmart doing remarkable things for the environment. Have you seen their fucking stores?! Bright as hell when you walk in that it's blinding. Tons of energy being wasted right there not to mention all the other shit they do like forcing companies to outsource their products to factories in China. The last thing on the mind of those Chinese factories is being green.

they rape state and local governments of tax revenues through questionable tax avoidance practices and strong arming subsidies. This, in turn, cuts funding for education, etc. It's money out of your pockets.

they treat their employees like shit. horrible benefits, if you can even call them benefits.

they do wonderful things for the local businesses...and by wonderful I mean they put them out of business.

all in all, I'd say they are a wonderful company.

they provide a product that people want at a price they want. If Wallmart was not doing any good they would be gone. The company only exists because the consumer wants it too.

Well I mean I never said they were they best company in the world, did I? I was simply relaying information I was told. Wal-Mart has done substantial things toward "greening" their supply chain. Its unrealistic to say that they will be the greenest company in the world (they obviously won't), but they are certainly doing their part.

It all comes down to scale - if Wal-Mart can eliminate 10% of their plastic bag use, do you know how much plastic will be saved? Like I said, I'm certainly not defending them. I have no affiliation with them, I don't even like shopping there because it creeps me out so much. But we can't knock them for trying to do their part.

Like I said earlier, Wal-Mart has the ability to bully their suppliers. If they want something to be more environmentally friendly, the supplier will do it.

at least in the transportation industry they are a company killer- they give you huge amounts of freight to haul but then demands stupid low rates- companies that are struggling or stupid accept this and a huge portion of their company becomes dedicated to Walmart without making any profit- soon enough they're demanding lower rates- you say we cant- then bam they drop you- leaving you with a shit load of employees, equipment, and no business to replace it all

My dad is VP of sales for a major trucking company and when they came to them looking for service they told Walmart to fuck off



but I do love walmart for cheap shit- but I prefer sams club where you can buy a fucking pallet of toilet paper

Capitalism > Everything.  People can bitch and complain all they want, but in the end, no one wants to throw away the extremely high quality of life we have because of that system.
