Manhattan panoramic HDR

I like panoramic and the odd HDR. I thought this was the perfect place to combine them!

That was taken from the top of rockafeller plaza correct? I tok so many pictures from up there. It was the day after red bull air race was on the hudson or I would have gotten some shots of that. You can see the new years ball drop thingy from the other side of the building. that and the empire state building is right there

disclaimer: not a big fan of the whole HDR bizznaass

That aside, I like the way the buildings are rendered but the whole image is much too dark. That goopy posterizing blob at the top the picture that is supposed to represent the sky needs to be worked on... a bit brighter and some more natural color would help methinks. That said, for an HDR, I think it's got some potential... would love to the original though.

I agree, its a tad dark.

Having said that, I'm a huge fan of (most) HDR shots, and this is sick. Only thing is I would have liked more foreground (like, it feels like its been cut off a bit short at the bottom of the panorama)

What did you shoot with? My uncle just gave me his 400D (Rebel XTi) and I'm just learning right now. I (if I may say so) have a relatively good eye for pictures, but from the few hours or so I've spent using it, I must say that it's not easy work getting the camera to get the picture you want.

I'd like to learn how to take HDR shots on my 400D, I live dead in the middle of Vancouver so it'd be pretty cool.

the sky is a litttle overdone. would have been nice to see cloud/sky/sun detail in that.

the simplest way is to use AEB (auto exposure bracketing aka HDR), which is in the XTi's menus I believe (im not 100%, never used one myself) then (mounted to tripod) compose and expose your shot correctly like normal
then put on 2 sec. timer, take your hands away and let it take the three pictures. expose only a stop or two away from normal for your first couple tries. -1 0 +1 is a good starting base, move out more as you can process better later. then take the three pictures, download photomatix, start it up, load the pictures, and read the tutorials it comes with.

if you search around a bit online, youll find more than enough HDR tut's specific to your camera and very basic.

Mmmmm same.

I've never liked the HDR thing - I have a friend who does it, and all appeal aside, it looks like the photographer/editor is trying to hard. Needless to say, I don't like the look of them either.

However, this is decent. Something about the backlit buildings just gets me going on this, not to mention that your subject matter is glorious. What I do think, though, (and this is my opinion, so no worries), is that nighttime is a time of darkness, of blurred lines, of shadows, when things are skewed and not definite - the HDR sets too many lines for me, too much detail for my idea of "nighttime." I would rather see those lines softer in this setting.

You destroyed my fav skyline. Also a good place to capture the skyline is in the brooklyn navy yard. I am sorry though, hdr on a panorama just doesnt work, hdrs i don't mind, as long as someone doesnt claim it as a picture. HDR's are images, half cg half picture

yes there is... you didn't draw it but to say there is no computer involved in the generation of the above image is a bit of a stretch.

I always thought CGI was when your computer actually generates an image. Be it 3D (gmax/blender) Photoshop media design, from scratch with brushes and other means of using a computer to generate something.

Not just combining photos

CGI is computer generated IMGAGES
The mod hdr process is computer generated, the computer picks the best of the highlights, the midtones, and the shadows, to make the image perfetly exposed thus created a high dynamic range. You can enhance the dynamic range with a Granduated ND filter the dynamic range without a computer. Here is an example

the point is, if an image created using a computer can GENERATE can take 3 photos and create a higher contrast ratio than the human eye and my 7 year old cousin can do it. Well then i think it can be said it is CG

yep. Billek has a cool hdr he took on his phone, i saw it in some thread. I am sorry but HDR is a phase. I don't think you will ever see an hdr in a gallery or will anyone in ten years look back at HDRs and think "Wow that really was a neat piece of software". People will be thinking "wow what a cheap way to extremely contrast a photo.

If a photo doesn't look good without any post production, then it won't look good with post production. Ansel adams never used CS5, but he managed to get a better photo than you would.

Hold yourself to a highest possible standard, and your photos will improve, but don't be a cocky bastard

one word/ and or question about hdr...i use photomatrix...in a sense..it just tone maps the images...then you must run it through PS and run alot of masking underlays to pop details where detail has been lost through tonemapping.

So, just uploading photos into photomatrix...clicking a few preset buttons...and taking that finally result..would just be a tone mapped image...not HDR...right?

Sorry..love good HDR..which involves hours of processing to pop every detail....
