Sti or Truck+snowmobile

basically I got 30k and I am going to college next year at UBC, Queens or Utah

If I get a truck what should I get (needs to have 4x4)

Yota paid me very handsomely when they recalled my truck, so I went right out and bought another, just not the same truck. Frame rust was a serious issue from 95 all the way til 03, but they took care of their customers. Funny how the big problems and recalls started happening once yota moved manufacturing of their trucks to the states :/ Now I drive a v6 t100 and I've got no compaints so far.

and charmander I'd love to know the laundry list of work done on that truck before you got it, and keep in touch cause I'd love to know how it's holding up for ya in a year or two.

it all comes down to how much your gonna use the sled. If all the time, id go with a truck. If say once every two weeks or so id say the sti. You wont be destroying it with just that much use.

also, i figure i should add that unless you have somewhere to stay in whistler (assuming you go to UBC) youre going to be driving from kits, through downtown vancouver, up the sea to sky to whistler, and then back down again later that night. that is a decent journey that is going to cost a shit ton on gas for a day of sledding.

you can drive from horseshoe to whistler in about an hour if you are driving at a reasonable speed without a trailer, add almost an hour and a half because youll be driving with a trailer and through downtown vancouver.

work done, before i bought her.
not alot. new exhaust.

work i've done, just the basics, fluids, brakes, i fixed the rusted out rocker panels, rewired most everything, new carb/intake, new seat.

everthing is pretty much what came off the assembly line 40 ears ago.

ive had her for about 6 months and hasnt skipped a beat, i need to replace the timing chain but thats all in the immediate future. hasnt skipped timing which is good considering its the factory chain.

i say go subaru and sled on the hitch. the subaru will be fine for regular winter driving

A subaru would'nt have enough clearance, not to mention towing is just annoying.  Also imagine an icy access road that has 2 trenches 10 inches deep from big 4X4's tires flying up the road. Try driving a subaru with a dinky ass trailer up that.  and you cant drop ur sled out and go from there cuz a little way up the road its bare for a km, so that would fuck ur sled too.

Only a few months of the winter u can just drop ur sled at the bottom and go, otherwise u ahve to 4by further and further up the road, sometimes like 5 kms

i haven't read the whole thread....but you should take 8 grand to buy a vehicle and a snowmobile, then invest the rest in retirement. that is the smart choice.

haha i remember when this was originally posted and thinking, "this thread sucks"

People telling the kid to get a fucking 2500 duramax diesel or a cummings just to tow a sled are retarded. My buddy tows around his 19 foot boat in a 2wd 4 cylinder s10 with no trouble. I hope he didn't take your advice and waste his money on a huge truck just so he could tow a sled and move his tv and microwave back and forth to college

id say try and find a used 5 speed toyota tacoma four door, plus a used sled and have some extra money for gas since this summer, at least where i live its going to be $5 a gallon.

everyones gotta get off subarus nuts....they arent really that great of a car. The wrx or sti is a pretty fast car but who honestly gives a shit if you drive a rally car for the street, pretty much no one. If your dropping 30g's please get something nicer. You could get a solid audi a6 wagon if you want the space, a pretty awsome truck, so many options. Dont buy a jewbaru to impress your ski buddies,

With $30 grand you can do so many things. Get a truck with mat tracks, that'd be beastly in the snow and you can bring a bunch of people and snacks

I'd agree if youre towing something, but as far as price per mile, gassers average better without loads.

not necessarily... gassers really dont have the guts a diesel does, easy comparison, my chevy and my dads dodge, both 400hp, mine 5.7l, and his is 5.9, i get 7 mpg he gets ~18
