Get a truck, and a sled deck. All the people going "tow with the car!" probably haven't ever been snowmobiling anywhere good. The car doesn't have the ground clearance to get there. Also, although it will tow it, you're going to be straining the transmission. If the sled is something you really want to have, buy a half ton pickup that does decent on gas and can tow/have the sled in the back.

i guess i realize at this point that i'm wrong about an sti being able to tow a snowmobile sufficiently. that said, i have one more point to raise that i raised before and no one addressed.

you keep saying, "you can't get anywhere good to snowmobile with a subaru." well, if your access roads are covered with enough snow that you need a truck to get through them, why not just park at the bottom and sled up those access roads??

cause that could turn into any where form 1 to 10 miles of extra riding depending where your dumbass got stuck or left the car and trailer. and you cant just park your suburu and trailer in the middle of the road wherever you please, thats why there is a trail head your trying to access with a parking lot and a trailer turnaround. you obviously have never towed anything but you just can flip a bitch with a trailer in the middle of a "access road", least not in the mountains where i live, thats for damn sure.

Because an sti is meant to haul ass and perform well while being a car, not towing. A truck is built to tow. If this kid wants to be a retard and tow a sled with an sti then fine, he'll shoot himself after the first snowy day.

Did you just huff glue or something? They do NOT tow well at ALL, and add to that a foot of snow, and you've got a car stuck in the middle of the road. It's a stupid idea, coaxed onward by stupid 14 year olds who play Need For Speed and choose a Subaru.

you could easily tow a snowmobile with an sti, ive got a friend who tow's his two atv's with an accord, i think the trailer, atv's and equipment add up to like 1300 lbs and he drives that shit up big hill's, shitty dirt roads, offroad (though nothing extreme) and it does fine. an sti towing much less would do much better.
its very doable, just not the ideal setup. all these people saying you need a fucking semi truck to tow a tiny little sled are just a bunch of pussies. sure you wont be able to get to as many places as a high ground clearance truck or suv, but if your just towing it up snow mountain passes and stuff it will do fine.
but IMO, fuck sti's. sti's are for people who dont know shit about driving or good cars and want to pretend to be ken block in their "rally car" its not a rally car, its an understeering, numb, pig with a turbo

Everyone here suggesting a Subaru to tow a sled with is a moron.

Get the truck man. It is made to tow shit and go offroad. Idk if you want fullsize or not but either will work for towing just a sled.

Look at old Silverados, S10s, Rangers or F150s. Dodges blow unless they have a Cummins, and even then, they still blow.

s10s and rangers can barley pull their own weight unless they have a v6, and rangers are complete shit its more like a truck you would use to roll around a ranch or a farm to see whats going on, it really has no purpose of being a truck, and s10s dont even get me started, there just ment for beaners to get there hands on lower them put a fuckin stupid ass paint job on it and gay ass rims and think its the dam shit, just look at this horror

ford f-150s are ok, they take alot of maitnence as far keeping the body in shape because the bumpers rot out like shit, the body starts rusting within 5 years, there not built good at all, but if you get a ford truck special editions like the king ranch or the harley davidson or the power stroke, then thats when you see the quality in ford, espically in the raptor like i posted before, there is no truck out there that can compare to the raptor,

chevys and GMCs are good, on the expensive side but are real good trucks, and dodge imo have the best transmission out there, its last forever, with a cummins engine and it will get you through anything, the bodys arnt the best out there but do last alot longer then ford

weve worn out 3 in the last 10 years in my dads truck, but thats the only complaint against dodge i have, aside from the lifter pumps in the 24v cummins,
a word of warning if you end up at diesel get a full set of gauges right off.
when that fuel pressure plummets you best pull over.

Rangers are good small trucks, they are not full size, so as long as you don't try and use them as a full size truck you will be fine. They keep running as long as you keep up proper maintenance. You will also pay a hell of a lot less for a used ranger then for a used taco. Nissans are good for the small/mid size.

If you want a full size truck f150s are good to go.

S10s and Rangers are fine if you have the V6s in them. They are actually pretty fucking ballsy. Believe me, I owned 3.

And I only put the Ford in there to appeal to the host of OMG GM BANKRUPTED US pussies.

I would love to get my hands on a hilux. Circa 1999, ext cab.

Personally I am going to go with a frontier, they are a little bigger then a ranger, and pretty tough.

yeah if your gonna get a truck get something smaller, and the tacoma is probably the best smaller truck out there. get an older tacoma for under 10 grand, snowmobile and trailer for 5, and you still have enough for a used sti!
just as long as you dont get some massive bro truck with a huge pointless lift and chrome wheels or murdered out then you will be fine.

Yotas are high priced for a reason. I've had about 5 of em and never had any problems, original parts that last well over 200,000 miles. Everyone I have ever talked to that had a ranger was either on their 3rd transmission or almost had their rear axle fall out on the road. yotas are bombproof that's why they cost big money.

Towing anything heavy with an STi is a bad joke, that transmission and drivetrain isn't made for towing..

But as a Norwegian I just gotta ask this:

What's with you north-americans needing a giant 6L V8 (etc.) to tow something weighing less than 2000lbs?

I mean, while serving in the Norwegian army I towed a trailer weighing in at about 1500lbs up steep hills in about 2 feet of snow with this car:

That's Mercedes Benz 240 GD, 2,4liter diesel engine with 72bhp.. It's amazing what you can do with a manual gear-box, locking diffs and the right type of transmission..

Except the Frontier is available with a 4 door, long box that the Colorado's do not offer. Are you trying to compare a full-size Chevy to a Frontier? Apples to oranges. Not to mention you can actually get a manual transmission on the Nissan.

Toyota made great vehicles, notice the use of the past tense. If you are looking at Tacomas, anything 2004 or before is the way to go. The 2005+ models are not worth it at all. Toyota has gone way downhill over the past few years. Do some research for Gen 2 Tacoma TSB's and you will find some interesting reading material. Especially regarding the apparently shitty manual AND automatic transmissions.

Slightly on topic for this thread I suppose; I am going to be selling my 2006 WRX Limited in the next month or so for a truck. Subaru's are fun to mess around in, but less than ideal for my needs. Prior to my WRX, I owned a 2003 Tacoma Xtra Cab 4x4 V6 5 speed with the TRD package and I very much wish I still had it. My current personal preference is for Nissan's as they offer many of the same options as Toyota but without the inflated price tag. Not to mention the fact that Nissan has not recalled a shit load of different vehicles like some other Japanese automaker...

4-runner / land cruiser / taco have all been killed by trying to make them look big and cool (inside and out).

Yeah, my point exactly. I'm not talking down on having huge engines or anything like that. But I'm pretty sure that if some of the guys here learned how to properly use a manual transmission car, as you get 100% control of when the car shifts. Which when driving through rough terrain is key.

And by the way, I don't consider myself a good driver at all. Atleast not compared to some of the guys I saw behind the wheel while serving in the army. The things they can get those cars through is just insane.

turbo diesel puts out a decent amount of torque, also, congrats on 1500 pounds, my truck weighs 5000, and can tow quite a bit more than 1500... with my "massive" 5.7 liter v8.

I'm not saying you can't tow heavier with bigger engines. And I'm not saying 1500lbs is so damn impressive. I'm just asking if it is really needed? I mean if all I wanted to do was tow heavy, I'd buy a tractor.

And the MB 240 GD puts out 137Nm (101 ft lbf) of torque, which isn't a lot.
