Skiing colleges

sorry i posted this in ski gabber to i wasnt sure wich one to do.. i have to pick what colleges im applying to, and i want a college with a good park skiing and a good school. what are some good schools for that besides university of utah. thanks

East Coast: UVM, Dartmouth, Champlain, Clarkson, UNH, Colby, Bates

West Coast: MSU, CU Boulder, Colorado College, Westminster

that doesnt really mean anything....

example: Stanford is on it, and it is 5 hours from Tahoe, the closest area

You don't get to shred as much in boulder because it takes an hour and a half to get to breck and key. Unless you can take the winter off and live in summit which is sick. Utah is by far the best shred school there is.

Oh and pc is putting in a fully lit medium park open from 9-9 so you don't have to worry about scheduling classes around skiing anymore.

If your going to school to ski you should probably stop wasting the money on school. If the school you chose to go to has skiing near by, then go skiing when you have time. If it doesn't, then you can find something else to do in your utter lack of free time.

Western schools near skiing.

-Montana State - Bridger Bowl 15 mins out. Bigsky/Moonlight are an hour out.
-Montana: Montana Snowbowl is half hour away + 3 or 4 more within an hour. A bunch more within 4 hrs
-ColoradoU: a bunch within 3 hours.
-UUtah: a shitload within half an hour. Lots of choices.
-Nevada-Reno: 5 or 6 areas within 45 mins. a bunch more within an hour half. Mammoth is 3 hrs away.
-Western Washington: Baker and Stevens pass are within 2-3 hrs.
-Portland, Or schools: Hood resorts are 2-3 hrs away depending on snow.
-Oregon/Oregon St: 2-2.5 hrs from Batchlor. 3-4 hrs or so from Hood.
-Southern Oregon U: 30 mins from Mt Ashland. 1 hr from Shasta. 3.5 from Batchlor. 5hr from Tahoe/Hood
-LA schools. Within an hour of 5 resorts. 6 from mammoth.
-Eastern Washington/Spokane schools: 4 or 5 within 1.5hr
-Seattle schools: hour from snowqualmie. little further to stevens pass. bout the same to crystal mtn.
-Chico St/Sacramento St/UCDavis - 2 hrs from Tahoe resorts. 4.5-5 from Mammoth.
-Boise St: 35-45 to Bogus Basin. few more incl. Sun Valley within 2-3 hrs.

Id agree with you if they weren't in Mammoth every single weekend and didnt have a house to stay at and didn't get really cheap season passes and didn't get pro forms and didn't get to compete in freestyle competitions every weekend.

Cal Poly was only 20 miles from mt baldy and 50 minutes to Mt. High. I would skit 4+ days a week. I have friends that go to high 3 times a durring the week cause its open till 10pm and go to mammoth every weekend.


You should know this, you are in tahoe. But I think you only get San Francisco people there... and confused socal people that dont know about mammoth.


USC has one of the most amazing freestyle ski teams you could ever hope for and they are in downtown LA. I don't get why people think we don't ski...



So... SD isn't as good as them... but they are the best in the conference. And they can go surfing if the feel like it.

Maybe you dont go 7 days a week but your season is oct/nov to june/july and you can actually be on a team and compete against other students just looking to have a good time.

Well anyone whos anyone can be dedicated and drive 5-6 hours to go skiing... especially if they have the money for gas and to pay dues for a cabin... as well as the non-demanding major (or slackoff attitude) that allows such a thing - and there is no problem with that...

but when you have a resort or 3 within an hour or two? or even a half hour? it's going to be FAR cheaper and you don't risk getting stuck in some storm and not making it back for your midterm on Monday...



As far as LA being close to skiing? It would be FAR more enticing if there weren't seasons where Mt High claimed a whole 21 inches of natural snowfall like 2008... If Bear, Summit, Baldy, and High didn't have to rely on lucky seasons and snowmaking technology, then I doubt so many people would make the downright arduous 6-7hr trip up to Mammoth all the time.

University of British Columbia in Vancouver. One of the top 40 universities in the world. 2 hours from whistler and baker. 45 minutes from 3 local ski areas: grouse, seymour, and cypress

I'm not saying you are entirely wrong, but you just made a ton of incorrect assumptions there.

All I'm saying is that if you plan stuff out right, you can get easily get over 60 days with around 30 of them being at Mammoth if you just go to the race weekends. The school offerings are great schools. There is a really strong and growing community.

My friend Chuck at 24 is now a regional Ride rider. He was on the UCLA team and grew up in so cal. He was pre med and is now preparing for grad school.

Laura who I think you know just got into grad school after being president at the team at my school.

The reason I support this so heavily is that there are programs and what not that are better at say, the U of U but if you feel like being an aerospace engineer or archaeologist, you are better off in So. Cal.

I'm not trying to convince people to come here, i'm saying it is an option that shouldn't be laughed at.

The schools on that list have enough members in their university and have enough funding from their schools to make the club feasible. UCLB gets 10,000 a year for their club from their school to help make it affordable.


That and having surfing/the beach/ mountains/ and being an entertainment hub is enough to help make it through the off seasons and not be too upset.

Dont get me wrong, I understand the draw for LA in many areas, and the fact that there is skiing? that's cool. Hell, I have a film/media studies degree and now i'm going for my MFA... going to LA wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing in my field.

However... if I'm going to college, but want really legit ski options nearby? I wouldnt be anywhere near LA, because manmade snow and gaper crowds at High and Bear just doesnt cut it for me. Maybe that's just a personal thing, but so be the case. (It's the same reason why if I was near Tahoe, I wouldnt be getting a pass at northstar or boreal, and instead would be at alpine or squaw... which both have legit parks, less crowds AND better mountains/snow - and why many SoCal people get mammoth/june passes)

I do see your point as far as programs are concearned... but also, take into consideration that getting into high end programs at UCLA and USC and a lot of those schools are much harder for somebody who is coming from out of state. (UCLA's film program takes 80 students a year. Long Beach's takes 200 [if i'm not mistaken]. In-state students get priority. Competitive much? Personally, I dont like such competition. doesnt make things practical enough.)

By the way. There is no UCLB... There is a UCSB, and a CSULB, but no UCLB lol.
