Park skiing

Have you ever some elitist skier in the lift line with the newest $1500 carvers and the top notch suit call you names or look down on you for your 2XL outerwear and "double tippers?" Maybe it was just an elderly fellow with 210's. Mostly, they claim we can't REALLY ski and we're just hooligans wrecking our equipment on those damn rail things.

Have you ever noticed that while they have the highest quality gear for skiing the mountain, we as park rats have better form, we're faster, and have more control, with our silly double-tippers with rusty dulled out edges and center mounted bindings.

We also take it to a new level where they never would, which you can see in any amateur backcountry edit. We kill the whole mountain and do it better than them. We have the love for the sport too, that's why we're all on NS right now. I don't know about you guys but I got up to the hill about 55 days this season, that's takes some motivation and I'm sure that's only a start for how much you guys got in.

Of course I'm speaking in general terms.

there are douchers in every sport, and pretty much every facet of life. I'd suggest getting used to it.

As far as douchers and all the mean muggin on the mountain, shit was way worse even just a few years ago (and especially like a decade ago) as park skiing/non directional shit was just smashing  through the orthodox bullshit. It's much better today.

I feel quite the opposite. Its not the family people, the weekend warriors, or the older die hards that get on my nerves. Its those stereotypical park skiers that really grind my gears. Those are the people with all the new gear and clothes, and they all have that same shitty fucking attitude. They cut you in line, yell at randoms from the chair, snake people then laugh about it, all because they think they look fly in there new gear with all there friends who are exactly the same.

This too, but I'm more mad at the thought that we as park/ everything skiers are frowned upon by everyone else (generally)

To Schlop: This is pretty much why park skiers are looked down upon. It's because of the attitude of the "typical" park skier.

Don't judge how other people ski. If they want to ride race skis and wear tight outwear than let them. There is more than one way to enjoy the mountain. And in 40 years I am guessing that we will be the ones on race skis looking at kids who act like they are so core and thug and shaking our heads at how stupid they look.

in the same line i like to put snowboarders who dress thug and sit on landings and yell at you when you nearly ski past 'm on your afterbang landing ride-away .....

they don't really grind my gear, but i feel sorry for their ignorance ....






Everytime someone tells me he/she is a skier, i ask myself, is he/she a skier? or a Skier ?

ehh i just kind of ignore them, and laugh at their ignorance. but the ones who do annoy me are the people, that ski like us, but feel that they own the park and are better than everyone ever, as mentioned above.

i totally agree with what youre saying, but sorry to break it to you, at least half of these carving weekend warriors are going to have great technique, and WILL be faster than your average park rat. the other half just such shit tho.

and how you said park skiers kill the whole mountain, including cliffs, pow, and big mountain, sorry youre wrong. the majority of park skiers ski pow in the back seat, with their hands at their hips, flailing around because they cant stop properly. almost every grizzled backcountry hippie is a better skier than 90% of park rats.

but i 100% agree with your comments about people no minding their own business, its fukin annoying.

I am a true backcountry skier and do ski some park, and i very much agree. and it is true that you get some people who are in the park on their 2nd day of skiing and thats all they do; not the best skiers in my mind. ive skied since i was 3 and for a long time i did lots of moguls. no comps just moguls. then i started hucking cliffs, skiing sick, lines and hitting backcountry style terrain and have been doing that ever since with some park mixed in. i agree with the statement above but as to the original statement some park skiers arent good skiers, just good in the park. im chill with any park skier whos not a jerk and can at least ski other stuff decently

I've always felt that as long as you're going down the mountain, you're doing it right. 

The economics of skiing, that not everyone can realistically ski on a private trail, means we have to get along.  So when you go skiing, you have to understand that you're sharing the slopes.  That can't really work out unless people can be open minded towards and accepting of fellow snow-sliders. 

So I agree with you in the sense that these people are douchey and are degrading the skiing experience.  But as someone who spent many years racing before crossing into newschoolin', I have to say that owning $1000+ skis does not automatically turn you into an asswipe, and plenty of old folks are very chill.

to be honest, at least at my mountain, this is basically all snowboarders. the majority of the ppl here are snowboarders, and this kind of characterizes them. there are a few skiers, but i feel like your description describes snowboarders, hate to generalize snowboarders, most of my friends snowboard, but for me its the truth.

To everyone with intelligent responses, you're right for the most part, can't really quote all of you.
I go out to have fun, do my thing, but when people go out of their way to insult or look down on me, it takes a lot of the fun away..

When I said park skiiers kill the whole mountain, I forgot about the EC and such where the park is where you start and where you stay, because out West it's different. Before I started to go out to hill with friends, I skied with my dad and his friends for years and years. By the time I was 12, there wasn't a single part of Whistler/Blackcomb I hadn't seen. Nowadays, I lap the park with friends on gross days, but if the conditions are right, I'll be out and about for as long as possible before all the freshy's gone.

Regarding what people are wearing and how they ski, I factor in the attitude they portray: if I get on the chair with a middle-aged "gaper" and he's having a great day and laughing, I'll obviously chat him up and make a new friend. If he's a fancy pants race dad giving me shit for looking like a punk, I wouldn't be very impressed.

I'm gonna try and keep as updated as possible with the skiing scene over the years, and never fade away into a grumpy old man ripping on teenagers for whatever the style is in 30 years.

Im liking all the replys on this subject to see what ppl think about all of this....i pretty much agree with everyone....but yeah the people that get to me are the ones that yell at the little kids and laugh at the kids that are falling sliding a box straight... we were all like that trying and intrested in the park so why laugh at them? help em out or somethin...but on the other side they gotta learn how to be safe and smart in the park like not messing up take offs and not sitting on the landings where no one can see them....

no. did your mother teach you nothin. This is what i mean. (im really not hating on you cause obviously i dont know the extent of there douchebaggery). But kids that think its alright to be assholes to other people just because they think they are "cooler", more in tune with ski culture, or just more entitled for one reason or another. Its like this whole highschool attitude that gets carried onto the hill. I mean i know most kids that are up all the time shredding hard are actually in highschool, but no one wants that bullshit judging and just rudeness on the hill.
