Shit you wish you knew before you bought an apartment.....advice for first timers.

Look around I see a lot of ways to get fucked here. Deposit money not returned over BS. Overpriced newer apartments with no utilities or shitty utility situations. Or apartments dating back to the 60's and 70's with more generous utility situations, but you'll find some rough edges here and there because of them being so old.

I see apartmentratings.com, site looks rough though. Its like going to try and find a good hotel, people even complain about the expensive ones. So no matter how you slice it, someones there to ruin the "perfect apartment" with their nightmare story.

I've been looking at apartments and hell everything looks and sounds cool at some of these older places. But im thinking well fuck maybe I should have my friend go to the other apartment next door and like walk around, or bang on the wall a lil.

I hear beign on top floor is best because you will be bothered least by the neighbors, but will consequently bother them the most. Then I remember my buddies going to college, getting a bottom room floor, and someone down the hall from them had their window kicked in, and all their shit stolen. Plus if you have a bottom floor, your balcony is just a patio, and you can't store shit on a patio and expect it not to be stolen.

Im tryin my best to swing the expenses needed to afford a place with its own garage so I can bike around campus (Don't wannna haul my bike up to the apartment thats only 700 square ft). Then I want my owner washer / dryer. Because the last thing you need is someone yanking your drawers (Really just don't want to have my clothes stolen....all it'll take is one time and i'll be like fuck, you just stole a grand worth of clothes).

I want my own garage also because I think 9/10 college students and their friends will be carelessly opening doors and dinging the cars next to them.

I used to think man now I gotta buy a table, and a couch, a chair, maybe a real entertainment center, but after looking at the monthly expense of renters insurance, utilities, trash, rent, garage rental....

Im like man this is just over the roof expensive.

The worst part about apartment shopping is finding out just hwat utilities are included and come with the place. I wish everyone just included utilities. Instead I have to guestimate here with this place, and fucking hell it sucks.

I was told get a place that provides gas (heat), and then make sure it has a gas stove. So that way I can atleast use as much heat, and cook as much as I want without using electricity.

I used to build balls to the walls computers that had 850w a power supplies for the incredible power demand of graphics cards, hard drives, and so on. Now I am thinking...use the laptop more, build a mini-atx computer instead thats more efficient.


Plus......im going to miss TV a bit. Such a luxury it is. If I can get another room mate, things change, but roommates is a whole nother story. Some places offer free internet, but im like ehh no. I don't think you could handle my internet needs since my internet will basically be my way to view television / movies.
