External hard drive itunes

So i just purchased a 750gb external hardrive where i want to be able to open itunes and have the songs on my external hard drive be recognized and be able to play. since my computer is getting full and cant hold much more music. how would i go about this?

transfer all your songs to the external, then when you go to play a song it will ask you to locate it (since it was moved) and then just click on the new location on your external, and it should be able to find the rest of them if you're lucky.
or if you delete them all off your computer HD and just have them on the external, you can just "add folder" from the external in itunes
