Living out of a Subie.

Yo. Whatup NSG. I know NSers love their Subies. I have a 2002 Outback Limited, and sooner or later I'm gonna need to start living out of it. Does anyone have experience with living out of one of these badass automobiles? I'd appreciate it.

A good thing to do is to take out all the back seats and put/fit some sort of matress back there. And everything else will be based upon your needs.

a little to short and uncomfortable, but if i ever needed to live in a car, a subie is the one.
one of the best small cars to live out of.

go to joanne fabrics and get some egg foam stuff, and make a nice lil pad out of that in the back. During the night, move stuff off of the bed area and locate somewhere else, then during the day you can put stuff on top and move right along.

I lived out of my cavy from time to time. Worst was when it was negative 10 and i almost got comfortable then hit the trunk release with my foot and had to climb out and close it.

Subies are great cars, but man some of the fucking drivers of them make me want to crush an infant. Where i live Subaru drivers refuse to drive anymore than 10 mph under the speed limit. and for this reason i am glad not to have to live in one, although it seems like one of the best to live in, other than an suv or something.

The most important thing will be your mind set.

It is possible to live just about anywhere, on not a whole lot. Learn to be creative, learn to prioritize needs, and understand that it really is not that bad.

velcro up some curtains, you could make them super easy and cheap. The biggest issue with sleeping in cars is being cold as fuck. Where are you going to be living in it? You might need like a neg 20 rated bag which will probably set you back a little over $200.

why would you live in your car though when you could just make friends and couch surf? If you have some game just find girls to crash with and if you have game but aren't a slut then just tease them until they take you home then crash on their couch until they realize you aren't going to do them and they kick you out or maybe they will think you are gay and all girls for some reason love to hang out with gay guys so they will let you stay on their couch forever, if this happens then they will most likely also walk around naked in front of you and you will have a 24/7 peepshow and free place to live.

Best case scenario:

1. Meet girls
2. Convince them to let you crash at their place
3. Make them think you are gay
4. Observe boobies all day and have your own couch to live on
5. ???
6. Profit

cars with front seats that fold alllll the way back are such a win. if i ever need to sleep in my x-terra i just do it in the front passenger seat because it folds flat and is nice and comfy. plus then i can just leave all my shit in the back.

after sleeping in my jeep for a couple weeks at hood/mammoth it is very key that you wear socks because the smell will reak and make your car smell like swet

there was a really good thread on tgr about living out of your car. you should find that because it had so many good tips in it. and that fact that your car is a subaru is irrelevant. you're sleeping in a car dude.

keep the front windows cracked open a little to cut down the condensation in the morning and to save yourself from your stinky breath

get a good sleeping bag and also get something to sleep on. I've slept in the back of my truck a couple of times and its so uncomfortable sleeping on the carpet.

in terms of storage, get a couple of plastic stacker bins with lids.

don't use any kind of gas heating inside your car. the risk isn't worth it. along those lines, don't leave your engine running at night.

replace your interior lights with led bulbs. this way even if you leave them on overnight your battery will probably still be fine.

get an inverter so you can run your laptop from the car battery to keep yourself entertained.

there's a ton of other stuff but I can't think of it all right now. aside from adding that sleeping in your car is alright every once in a while, but living out of it for any length of time would probably suck.

if i were gonna do it id buy a truck with a big ass bed, and convert the entire bed into my sleeping/living area. get a topper, maybe modify it by making it taller so i can add more stuff and stand up. and you would have a ton of room to make a sweet little living area. that or a cargo van. id buy a tiny generator, and a bunch of car batteries, and you could charge them up during the day and have electricity like all day and night long. one of those mini space heaters would be awesome for the really cold nights.

stay in california if you're going to be like that man, there are only so many places to go and the season is months long. where are you planning on going? what are you going to do for lifts? changing mountains every few days is going to be fucking expensive.

Yeee. I'm plannin on staying in Cali mostly. But I'm liable to be all over the American West. Not really planning on skiing anywhere other than Squaw, Bear, and Boreal. I just like to hike hella deep and find my way out.

Buy a custom canvas wall tent with the walls cut down to 3 feet, so that the whole thing is about 5'5" at the peak. Burrow the fucker into the snow, and bring a sheepherder stove with you, so you can burn wood for heat and cooking. A cute little negative ten degree sleeping bag, a WWII army cot, and mess gear. Make the whole setup in a tucked away notch about a half hour skin from resort piste. Get your morning coffee, put on gear/skins, skin to the resort, ride down the hill to the lift, and your set to go. And then, ski home at the end of the day. Rinse, repeat. Go to lodge to find food and showers as needed. You seriously might not even have to leave the resort, EVER.

i've slept in my old one a couple time. crack the windows at night. you dont need the whole back as a bed so maybe a twin sized ground pad on one side and then all your stuff on the other side. find a stable place to take a shower everyday. like a truck stop or beach.

I've got a 97 legacy sedan and I've just put the backseat down and sleep with my feet going into the trunk. I guess as long as you're not super claustrophobic it's not a bad "camper"
