A poll of sorts

so here's an idea: a ski company that makes skis, but a percentage of the profits go to charities. Money could go to organizations like unicef, heifer, doctors without borders, would you support a company like that? obviously the quality of the skis would be of bigger concern, making sure they are every bit as good if not better as any other companies skis, but would that even play a deciding factor in what kind of skis you buy? even if it might cost a little more? just curious, playing with ideas for the future or maybe a business plan....

Cost is a big factor for me. When i get new equipment i dont compromise quality, but i always get it on sale during the cheapest times of year. If those skis were on sale and were within say, 50 dollars of the skis im targeting i would consider buying

The company would have to charge the same amount and then give some of the proceeds to charity. Otherwise you might as well ask people to buy the cheaper skis and donate $50 to a charity.

@winterstick-yeah, i'm trying to figure that out. part of the reason i started trying to make my own skis was because in one season i broke two pairs of skis, probably a lot of bad luck, but i just figured "shit i could make skis which will break in a few months" so i've been trying to ever since ha. But also yeah, i probably wouldnt be able to make huge donations first years as business starts rollin, but i think even promoting ideas and issues is important, but i just think if it isnt done for people a lot of the time they just say they will and never do...in any case thanks for the comments/replies!

That's so rad that you're making your own skis. And if you're making your own skis and trying to sell them, you are going to need something to stand out from the crowd. You probably won't be able to beat the big companies in quality or durability, and in all honesty a garage-made ski probably won't be much cheaper after all is said and done, so giving money to some charitable foundation is a great way to offer something unique. However, I would personally prefer to have my money going towards a foundation that means something to skiers/riders, like POW (Protect our Winters) as opposed to a tsunami relief fund, ya know?

personally I wouldn't buy them, because I would rather decide for myself what I want to donate to and how much (if I can even afford it)
try doing something that would appeal to your local scene. a local company here did a run of snowboards with Mt. seymour graphics for instance. there's also a brand that only one particular crew uses.
since you probably won't be shipping them overseas (at first!)
and good luck, I can say I love riding my locally-made snowboard better than any other board,especially since I helped make it and such

@winterstick-yeah i'm trying to make skis i'd be happy with and willing to pay money for, but i dunno, in all honesty, producing skis isn't nearly as expensive as you might think, start up costs are undoubtebly a bitch, but once you start ordering in reasonably sized quantities the price per pair is relatively reasonable...in all honesty the cost of skis often times seem ridiculously inflated, esp companies like k2 who manufacturer their skis in china, though i imagine this makes the bottom line better meaning more money going back to the sport allowing them to sponsor more athletes but still....

and @winterstick and biesenthal--..Part of my idea was allow people to decide what kind of organizations the money went to, that way it isnt necessarily just some organization, but maybe one that is important to then, like winterstick said he'd prefer it more if money went to POW...i figure then people will at least take a little interest in what the company is doing, and yeah again thanks for the responses :P
