So my Dad's just given me free use of his old camera setup..

My Dad has just agreed to let me use his old camera gear and from what he has said it is a great setup. It consists of a camera, flash, and two lenses. My problem is the camera is film, I would like to upgrade to a digital camera and still have use of the lenses and flash to cut cost. The camera is a Canon EO5 650, one lens is a 35-70mm the other is a 70-210mm, and the flash is a Speedlite 300EZ. Could you suggest to me a good digital body that isn't to expensive and will work with the lenses and flash? Also is it possible just to buy a camera body with no lens to save cash? If someone could tell me how nice of a setup this is I would appreciate it. (I'm sorry if that sounds arrogant but I do not know much about camera's but would defiantly like to learn). If it helps I'll be photographing wild life to start and then would like to get into skiing once I learn a little. Also I have emailed Canon tech support to but I figured it couldn't hurt to hear a second opinion.
Thanks a lot

It's never a bad thing to start out on a film camera. Since the 650 uses EOS lenses you can pretty much use any Canon DSLR camera. It just has to have say EOS or have EOS mount. From the rebel series, XXD series, 1D series, etc. Same goes for the flash, it's seems to be a auto flash so you probably won't learn much from it but it will work. Definitely don't rule out film though, it's a good time and a challenge.

Oh yea I should have made that clearer, I am in no means saying that I don't want to use film, it will be a great start and a good way to learn. I just to know what digital camera's use the lenses for the future. So it sounds like most of Canon's camera's use the EOS lenses. (Accidentally put EO5 in my 1st post) Can you explain what you mean by it being an auto flash so I won't learn much but it will work? I didn't understand what you meant there. Sorry I'm new to all of this.

For flash stuff, go to the strobist blog.

Wow I'm a fucking idiot. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I wrote that first post, sorry about that. Your camera uses lenses with an FD mount, unfortunately Canon stopped making camera's with an FD mount quite awhile ago. So no new DSLR's will have that mount, they are all EF mounts. If I were you I'd just shoot some film with it and learn the basic guidelines and move onto digital later on. You'll still be able to use the flash if you wanted to buy a DSLR.

Completely ignore this post. The EOS 650 does use an EF mount. I guess I was correct in my first post. Fucking Google is messing with me today.

as already stated, those lenses will be compatible with any camera with the eos mount (all digi bodies that i can think of).
cant tell you much about how nice those lenses are without a little more description (aperture, image stabilization, etc)
i also dont know if they are autofocus, but if not, you WILL have to manually focus, and possibly manually stop them down as well. this isnt the end of the world, just means you have to do a little more work to take a picture.
the flash isnt great (no manual control over power from what i can tell), but still probably an improvement over the built in flash.

I'm spending all my $$$ on ski gear and a GoPro this year so its hard to tell. I was just thinking that a nice camera for not that much money + a GoPro for video would be a pretty sick setup for a beginner. I'll probably have somewhere in the range of $300 from bday and xmas stuff. Also I can wait to make a purchase when I have more money because I can learn with the film camera I have now only for the cost of film basically.
(sorry for the dub post)

Film is so much fun. Such a tangible experience, really rewarding.

the cost of film plus the cost of processing, which unless you shoot plain ol color film will be a little more expensive because most places ship it out.
300 isnt much for a body, you might be able to find a t1i used or refurbed for around 400. not sure what else is gonna make that price range.
