Or do they?
I don't like to lend my opinions on a lot of things, for a various reasons. One I'm lazy, two I don't enjoy being karma raped, and three I'm just lazy. But after searching the forums and finding multiple threads on mash up bashing I thought I would lend my opinion. Even if it's not popular.
Many mash ups suck hard. Really hard. And when we live in an era with emerging open source free/shareware, and everything is so easy to steal, you would expect crap. Lot's of crap. But...
You also get a lot of gold. A lot of material that would have never existed within the realm of the corporate record labels. I saw a video [sorry for the lack of a reference or specificity] that added up GIRL TALK'S [mash up artist] legal fees under the current copyright laws. It was absolutely astronomical what this guy should owe. I don't want to dig into the legal aspects right now, but just wanted to point out that we have an interesting opportunity for creative content that otherwise wouldn't even be available.
Any schmuck sitting in any corner of the world, granted that schmuck has access to the internet and some some basic PC knowledge, has the capability to mix, mash, and share. Now that's, and pardon for the French, fucking ill.
Go back and tell any human being who has ever lived before the last 20 years and they wouldn't believe you. And probably would be furious with jealousy if they knew what we have.
Back to my point, the internet is the ultimate tool for freedom of speech and expression.Which I'm very passionate about. And maybe that's what this post is mostly about but maybe not. And while I will grant any arguer defending the position that mash ups suck, that most are crap, there is some great material out there and next time you are going to troll one on Youtube or NS, just remember your damned well lucky and privileged to even be doing so.
Other mash ups worth taking a look at:
