Tracing someone through their ip address

hopefully someone can help me out with this. i figured out how to find an ip address through an email but is it possible to use the ip address to trace back to the exact location?

google, i think you can ping it and do it through terminal as well, my friend did it the other day, found the server address for harvard. I'll try to find out what to do and get back to you.

sweet thanks. yeah ive been looing it up on google and it looks like the closest you can track is to where the servers are.. unless you have a warrant or something
