i'm kinda a bike n00b and i was wondering if you can make a single speed bike out of other bike parts just like a fixie.... but im not a hipster and i want to be able to coast. i tried google but there weren't many helpful results. please help me out
You need either horizontal dropouts or a chain tensioner so the chain doesn't lock up and throw you over the front. I don't know much about fixies though. My expertise lies with dirtjumper and street bikes. I'm thinking it would be similar though. It's almost impossible to build a single speed out of old parts. Especially if you don't have the right tools. (chain whip, cog key, chain break tool etc...) It only cost me around $55 to convert my bike into singlespeed which included a new master link, tensioner and labour. Just take it to your local shop.
i dont have a bike to sacrifice thats why i was asking if you can build one the same way you build fixies. it seems fun to be able to customize a bike like that. thank you though
get a cheap old frame, then you can put any parts you want on it. usually it will be about 200 for everything you need (the cheapest ishh) maybe a bit more
