NS Fixie Riders: Where/how did you acquire your frame?

I'm looking into building a cheap fixed gear, they look like a lot of fun. I don't however, want to drop a significant amount of money on it. I'm hoping to score at D.I. or a garage sale, but I'm wondering what other ways NS'ers have acquired frames to build up their track bike.

So NS, how did you acquire your fixie/frame?

find hipster walking bike to coffee shop. pull out a knife and say give me your bike. take bike and paint in your garage. switch up some parts. ride it.

look on CL in your area, garage sales, if you have a local bike kitchen or something like that

Growing up, I raced track almost every weekend. And now that I see these fucking hipsters on their "cool fixies, bro" and doing "700cmx" I wish I had never even touched a fixed gear. But If you want a cheap fixie, Pake is the way to go.

the question was: how did you acquire your fixie frame?
so far the responses have been "you are a hipster" and "you are stupid"

i'm kinda wondering how those pertain to the original post....also, the hipster hate is cool and all but I would leave it to the master arabian if i were you


i guess i should have rephrased the op a little bit. i kinda wanted this thread to be a place for people to tell success stories of finding frames in dumpsters, finding vintage bikes at garage sale for $10, etc.

I answered your post logically. simply rob a hipster of the bike s/he doesn't actually ride, re-paint it, and ride it. Their trust fund will hook up another bike, so don't feel bad.

I ride a fixie sometimes, and I'm not a hipster. I enjoy riding a fixie end of.

yeah. they aren't more efficient or anything like most hardcore fixie kids try to defend them as. i have ridden them a couple times, and it is just really fun. they are also incredibly simple, you don't have to worry about derraileurs and shifters and brakes breaking or needing tuning, and they can be a lot lighter

Craigslist, $35. I stripped this bike completely down to the metal and parts. Repainted entire bike, added new parts. Ended up with this.

mines a road frame from the 70's igot cranks and frame for 20 bucks from a local shops frame boneyard

I got an old 10-speed from a local thrift store, it was $10. Got a cog from a local shop and mounted it suicide-hub style, that cost $15. Stripped all the paint off and painted it matte black and white with an orange fork.

There you have it, a fixie for <$50

Yeah. I don't really ride park or anything. It's pretty much just a cruise around bike. Brakes are nice when you're running around in a city. Of course, with the old plastic mag wheels, the brakes are barely effective, haha.

got mine for free on craigslist. selling it now, if you want to buy a complete fixed gear haha. i never rode mine, i found if i wanted to commute my mountain bike id just take my roadie or my mtb, and i like fixing my bike so i dont really care about the "reliability" of a fixed gear.

Enough with all the hate for fixies. I just built myself a single geared fixie and it's mad fun. Being an engineer, I customized it beyond the norms to be a custom bike. If you want something cheap, find a garage sale, or you can buy a cheap schwinn road bike and then build from there. I would suggest a bianchi though, the super pista is insane, but pretty expensive as well.

got a smoking deal on it (included chris king headset). def. beat buying brand new.
