Running or any exercise is good no doubt, but I think skiers would benefit more from middle distance and sprinting work than doing tris/marathons. Weight training is where you will get a real benefit for skiing.
As long as you can run a 10km in decent time you are a good enough runner for skiing purposes (unless you are going to skin 100,000 vert in a trip or something insane). Also the mileage to be a competitive runner/triathlete has a lot of wear and tear/injury risk.
Either way, running is good for you, and marathons are great for building endurance, maybe a little more so than just light running and weight training. A lot of marathons support good causes too, something that benifits the community or some kind of cancer/illness research. Marathons can be a lot more rewarding than just working out in a gym, you not only feel good about your accomplishment, your also helping others out. So really, most marathons have a win-win out come.
But if Tammy Wallsticks=Tod Walnuts, then good for him. if not, woot for a random with a crazy name!
