...if i got caught doing graffiti on public property? i found an abandoned wall somewhat close to my house and im thinking about painting something.

think about it like this. if you're going to "tag" it like every other 16 year old white boy then go for it, and risk getting arrested for defacing property. if you want to construct art, go at it in the light of day with a bucket of paint and make something people will look at and appreciate for a long time to come.

thats the idea. ive always enjoyed looking at street art and have been wanting to do my own work. just never found a place for it.

im just asking if i were to run into the law, what would happen?

If you show up with a bucket of primer and a collapsable chair in broad daylight with white gloves than the only thing the police will do is stop and watch.


If you go out at 1:30am with a couple cans of rusto to do a shitty handy or wack ass throw than you will get caught and you will get charged.

Basically, make sure you have your piece game on lock before bringing it to a real wall. It helps to practice with paint on a canvas (big ones are really easy to build and cheap) and you can just paint over it every time you want to do a new piece...

Most likely they would ask if you have permission from the owner of the property.

Real graff writers have a Portfillio of pieces and artwork that they carry around to random stores and businesses in hopes that the owner will let them paint on the building. I did this at a minimart last year and the police did actually stop and hassle us. We showed them the note thing that the store owner gave us as permission and the cops were cool about it and just left. About a month ago there was a sick, perfectly smooth wall that was part of a shipping warehouse, but it was in a really high traffic area. We ended up making dummy papers to show to the po-po in case they ever dropped by but we never had to use them...

Is your location in a high traffic area like a roadway or sidewalk?

not really. there is a park office in the cluster of buildings id be painting on. i doubt anyone would come back where id be painting but id like to be prepared just in case.

If there is already graffiti in this cluster of buildings than I would say you are good to go, just because painting on a completely clean building is just asking for trouble. Believe it or not there is actually a small amount of judgement that goes into good graffiti.

i wouldn't recommend painting on someone's wall, but if it really is just an abandoned area, and you intend to paint something artistic, well done, and interesting....then i suppose have at it.

and remember, the impression you give off could help you a lot. Walk in like you own the place, plan it out, do it nicely, and make it look like this is a thought out idea. If you look sketchy as hell, and are prepared to run off at any moment, suddenly it looks like you have much more bad intent. If you don't look too concerned, they might think you are a genuine artist trying to make some boring wall look good, and hopefully the worst they'd do is simply make you paint over it.
