I see a lot of this in threads around here and I am totally guilty of it myself. It's not surprising as the ignorance that abounds in NS is daunting. I think it is important though when someone says a racist comment to not imminently jump to the conclusion that they are a racist and make it known in an accusatory tone. Most of these racist, sexist, homophobic comments we see arise from pure ignorance not necessarily blatant racism or sexism or homophobia. The problem is when you call someone a racist or a sexist they are immediately going to throw their defenses up and argument will ensue. No one will learn anything and no progress will be made. What is much harder is helping someone question why they may say things like that and work through it. I don't know if that could ever happen in a setting like this as it is a pretty personal matter but I just wanted to throw that out there. Fact is most people are good at heart and it is important to remember that.
