Everybody knows it. We are in need of a new mod.
1. Someone who wont go ape shit with the ban hammer
2. Someone who frequently logs on. (notice how no mods are on)
3. Will keep forums clean.
4. Anything else you can think of...

Post members you think will be a good mod and post why.

my vote is for Bigger_Spence.(El.Gato) personally because i see him on ns a lot, especially late nite which is when trolls come out. And i dont see him taking advantage of the responsibilities of being a mod. post members who you think fit the job.

This conversation happens every summer.

During the fall, when things become more skiing focused, the mods going after people posting nasty shit in the forums get viewed as nazi-like. People complain that we are the bad guys and so on.

So we become more and more relaxed about things...summer rolls around and the shit storm picks up super fast and it seems to take a bit of time to go from a more relaxed to an iron fist approach.

I assure you that no mod likes to see the BS that has been going on in NSG. And it really, really, really sucks to have to spend 30 minutes deleting the same threads over and over every night.

We can start IP banning everyone who is being a bitch in the forums....as long as that is what people want. It is tough to reach a middle ground. Members seem to think the mods are doing either too little or too much. There really isn't much leeway here though. If we are going to crack down, it has to be a universal crackdown. We have too many trolls/racist threads/etc on here to truly delve into each one. That means none of the "my friend signed onto my account and posted 1,000 tubgirl photos" or "sorry, I didn't know I wasn't allowed the say racial slurs", etc. We hear that shit constantly.

And it means going after the main accounts of all the trolls using alias to start shit, of which I am fine with, but everytime we seem to do this...people start threads opposite to this one stating the mods are being nazis.

anyway, take that as you will. I know the mods are having their own discussion on this and hopefully we can get stuff turned around soon.

This is 100% exactly right.

Our Mod team does an excellent job and I think they are all very good with deciding what is shit and what is valid. We try very hard to find that balance. We are well aware that when people get bored in the summer they like to troll. We delete that content and the members as quick as we can, but we cannot schedule to have a mod online 24/7. That is just not realistic.

Help us out when you can. If you see people causing shit. PM a mod online, or even send an email to help@newschoolers.com if its really bad. We base our modding on what the community seems to tolerate, so give us some feed back. That said "You guys are getting a little strict" will get you listened to, "mods are fucking nazi assholes" will not.

We are banning peoples everyday accounts if they are starting to create annoying aliases, so if you value your real account, just don't fuck around. Also FYI, being banned does not just mean you make another account to use while you are banned, that is just going to get your time out extended when we see it.

Voting for the most popular members isn't going to make them mods, we have our own process for that and implement them when we feel we need to.

YES. There really is no reason not to IP ban people that I can think of right now. IP banning will help so much in the forums, as a lot of the trolling happens to be the same people with aliases. If everyone that makes those stupid threads is IP banned, the forums would be way cleaner and we wouldn't have to worry about those same people coming back again and again with aliases.

As I said, it is tough. Sometimes it is the one time trolling where one kid is bored, just one time, and starts some shit. Overall not a bad member, but a member with a lapse of judgement.

Other times it is repeated many, many times.

As long as everyone can accept that any trolling on here will result in us going through with an IP ban, it would help. But when we start enforcing those bans, people better be cool with it.

This could result in some very pissed off aliases though. Remember what happened the in the "post before a green name" thread? IP banning really pisses people off and some of those people are skilled with computers, resulting in defacement or worse. The diplomatic route is alot safer and alot more responsible than simply banishing everyone that trolls. We don't need some pissed off member rerouting every link to NSG to lemonparty or efukt, especially when 10-16 year olds frequent these forums.

We do run a system right now that is sort of based upon strikes. Most bans are now 1-3 days. If we have to ban someone again, it goes from 1-4 weeks.

after that is is usually permanent. Then if that IP continues to troll, we ban the IP.

To really crack down, though, it requires a lot less subjectiveness on our parts. That makes the situations easier to deal with for us, because we just ban and move on and don't have to listen to the incessant BS that usually follows a ban. But it would also mean that if you wanted to be a active member on here, you need to at least reasonably respect the rules. That seems to be harder said than done.

It should be stated again, though. It IS summer. This shit happened every summer. Every single one, and I've been on NS far too long. it does get worse every year, no doubt, but as long as people support a tougher crackdown on trolling, we can push for it.

To be honest, I think the forums are looking pretty good this summer. There are a fair amount of mindless posts, but the level of hate seems much lower than the last couple summers. The last several nights are evidence enough that a thread creation limit should probably be implemented, but mostly we really just need to stop supporting this shit.

People need to stop trying to be "legendary" by posting in dozens of troll threads at night and then talking about how awesome it was in NSG the next day. Don't make threads saying "hahaha this is hilarious go look at how destroyed NSG is". Stop glorifying trolls, unless they're the most clever alias of the decade. Don't talk about how you witnessed the epic trolling spree of 2010. Cool. We all did. A LOT more members read the main forums than you'd imagine by looking at the number of posts in a particular thread. And mods, don't ban somebody and tell them that their antics were hilarious. Anybody can read why somebody was banned, and it makes it seem like trolls have mod support if they are slightly funny.

All these seemingly harmless little things contribute and support the trolling and clutter.

It's pretty funny how many people think Doug handpicks the mods, like he doesn't have better things to do than that. Aside from the occasional suggestion / input he doesn't even factor into the decision.

Anyway what we're talking about right now is, first, the problem isn't really lack of mods, it's that we don't really have easy to use effective tools to crush the bad trolls and idiots. ie I can't IP ban anybody, even using the admin panel, which is a separate site and not the quickest most intuitive thing ever. Second, there is a striking dearth of people we'd actually want to add, once you remove those people who aren't on enough or involved enough to make any difference. But we'll get it figured out.

I have always thought that once this place went nuts around 2005-2006 user based moderation (report the fuck out of everything) was key. If you guys PM mods with links and a one-sentence description the issue will be taken care of. No one can patrol a whole website like this one, lots of things will be missed. The degree to which you're willing to police each other by referring questionable shit to the mod staff will make a big difference to the level of enjoyment you get out of this site.

just make a stickied thread that warns anyone that an ip ban will result in trolling, etc.  once everyone knows that there will be less trolling.  when it happens... IP BAN HAMMER!  i get bored but i have never done stupid shit like this because i don't want to get banned.  it should be a threat.  just start ip banning people, please.
