i was making a sandwich and wondered this. When its a brand new loaf and your just opening it do you eat the first piece or skip it till your forced to? just curious
I throw the first heel out of the window for the birds to eat. When I get to the last heel, I usually eat it more because I am too lazy to open another loaf.
So I was in Japan with my uncle, and they throw the heels away before putting the bread in bags, so we found a bakery, and asked them to save the heels for us, he got free bread for about 3 years that he lived there. Heels only though...
the trick is you eat all of the loaf and then you have the two end pieces (the nubs)
you take the nubs and put a bunch of PB or honey or wtv on the brown side and smoosh those two sides together and it tastes just like the rest of the loaf
Because the heels have greater integrity, you can load a heel sammie up with more stuff. You can throw mayo, mustard, tomatoes, pickles etc on the same sandwich, and it holds up, where normal slices would become soggy or floppy, or the sandwich would fall apart.
I love the heels on french bread, not so much on white or wheat bread. I hate peanut butter heel sandwiches. Always happens during ski season when I'm making tons of sandwiches and I don't restock in time.
I always just leave the first piece and assume somebody else will eat it. If I end up being the person to get the first and last piece, i open a new bag and pretend like I didn't see the other
