My shop messed my skis up

Alright. So I just got some 4frnt TNKs mounted. I told the shop true center. then I called the shop when the ski tech was in and talked to him. I clearly told him I wanted my skis at TRUE CENTER. I picked them up today, brought them home (I live like 20-30 min away) and noticed that they were at core center.

This is the skis second mount(they were a demo ski) and I'm not sure if they would hold up with a third mount. I called them and they said to bring them in. I think theyre going to offer to re-mount them for free. Any suggestions/input on what I should do? This really pisses me off because I've been a valued customer there for a few years now and everyone who works there knows me pretty well.

this is why, before i started working in a shop, i always measured it out myself and put a piece of tape saying "mount here" on the skis. if they fuck up then, they have something against you... i would say go into the shop and get them re-mounted. but ask the shop if you skis rip out unreasonably soon, if they will give you new skis.

The only problem is that my shop is a race shop. The only pair of twins theyve like ever had were k2 extremes 2 seasons ago

Just go back and talk to them, don't go in demanding stuff and making a scene, stay calm and try and work something out.

And, for future reference, always mark your ski with masking tape and draw a line with marker as to where you want them mounted, then they can' get it wrong. Especially do this with true measured center mount, because center to one person might be different to another - even with specified true or core.

then go to a different shop, and dont say "oh there isn't one close by". i drive 2.5 hours to go to specific shops for specific things, so you can to.

and how many times has this been talked about, everyone should know to MARK THE MOUNT LINE YOUR SELF before going into the shop, that way if they mess it up, you can get them replaced a hell of alot easier

The closest ski shops from here are 2+ hours away and theyre literally the same shops as here. They both have a few locations.

And ya I'm definately making my own line next time. I'm not gunna run in and tell them they owe me new skis but if they just want to remount them I'm gunna try to negotiate

I always worry that I might offend some employee when i measure out and draw my own lines, but then i think, wait, I don't care what they think, i just want to make sure they don't fuck it up.

So, It's a sad lesson but live and learn i guess.

Hmm slight thread jack here, but i'm curious... How exact should a measurement for a mount line be? Like if I just measure it out with a measuring tape, will that be close enough?

Ya I'm pretty pissed. I called the guy literally 2 minutes before he started mounting them to make sure he knew I wanted them true center and he still fucked up

fuck it, ski em where they're at, its not gonna much a huge difference. if they mounted them traditional after that specification, then i'd be pissed.

rather than a third remount, just ask them if they wanna do some free tunes and a free mount on your next set of skis. like it was said earlier, dont go in demanding stuff, just try and work with them. they'll be more willing to give out free service than free product.

Theres like a 3.5 inch difference between core and true. It wouldnt be such a big deal if these werent my first "nice" skis. 159 silencers are worthless when you're 6'1". I'm definately gunna try to keep a cool head though.

haha for some reason i expected you to be much shorter and riding much smaller skis...

whatever, if you have them pull the bindings and look at where the holes will be on the new mount, see if anything is keyholed. as long as you have a little space, i'd say go for it. three holes isnt bad as long as they arent right next to each other.

I just measured and theres actually only a 1 3/4" difference frome core to true. So it would be impossible to re-mount them at center. I might just have to live with it.

Try and talk to them. They will probably give you something as compensation for their fuck up. Stay calm, and be understanding about it, and your chances are better.

I've said it before, but.. If you want something done right, do it yourself. There's a lot of benefits of learning to mount skis yourself. I actually quite enjoy it too.

this. There are so many ways to mount a ski at "center", you really have to mark it on the ski with tape & a line where you exactly want it.

Ok. So I went back to the shop today. The tech won't be back in until tuesday but the manager did try to see if it would work to remount them. He did kind of a rough measurement and it ended up inbetween the existing holes for the demo bindings and the FKS. He is pretty convinced that they will work and I'm gunna let them give it a shot.

This is pretty much exactly what it will look like. No room inbetween the holes. The black represents the existing holes and the red represents the holes that they want to drill. (this is for the back two screws on the toe/heel piece. front two will be fine) Even then it wont be at true center so it might not be worth the risk.

Id say don't risk it. the wholes been that close you'll probably end up ripping your toe piece out, depending on what core the skis have.

just buy symetrical skis. true center=recommended=core center. if a shop manages to mess a pair of symetricals up then you go in screaming

the exact same thing happened to my 4frnt stl. i got them remounted(a third time) and road them all last season without any trouble. i am normally pretty light on my skis though

Again, sorry to thread jack but I'm wondering where to mount my coreupts that are coming in here soon. Because of the ridiculously small underfoot (78 I believe)these will be strictly park skis. I bought them from Kenworthy and he just told me that they were center mounted. I'm thinking at putting them at about 5 cm forward, is that too much?

Also, I have a pair of 2010 Kung Fujas traditionally mounted but I want to center mount them. What's the difference between all of these mounts? “Core center”, “Mid sole”, “True center”, “Modern”

true center is right in the middle of the ski and core center is the "middle" of the ski when it comes to the sidecut and stuff. I'm not sure what modern is but if all this is marked on the ski you can probably figure that out judging on where the others are.

And I had silencers last season (80mm waist I think) mounted at core center. I dont think they would have been that great at true but maybe inbetween.

Ya. True center is right in the middle of the ski. If its not marked already you just measure from tip to tail and mark the center like I should have. haha

that's too close, you couldnt even put a helicoil in between those, which is the only safe thing to do when you're drilling near other holes. i'd just ski them where they're at and ask if you can get a free mount on your next pair and a couple tunes or something.

Ya thats what I'm thinking I'll do. But if they offer to replace them I'll take em up on it and they can use my TNKs for rentals. They used to always have the new rossi skis as rentals but they stopped that awhile ago.
