(HV30) Best computer for editing HDV footage

Hey guys, I recently grabbed an HV30 to replace my old Hi-8 Sony camera.

I have a toshiba laptop right now with 2.5gb of ram, 2ghz Intel core duo processor and a 500gb hard drive.

My computer works fine for editing footage off my old cam, but I don't think it will be able to keep up to HDV footage. I have Premiere Pro CS3. The computer has a firewire port, but the computer is starting to literally fall apart, a bunch of trim is missing, the battery has less than 20 mins on a charge, and the dvd drive is broken, I plan to keep it around to use for web browsing and school work.

I want to get a desktop for video editing, and to keep for when my laptop completely craps out.
I don't know to much about specific parts, but I do know about computer parts and can put together my own computer. I'm not opposed to getting an Imac, but it would take some convincing as I can get a better pc for the price. MY dad can get me a real copy of CS5 Production suite for free through his work so I plan on using that for most editing

A friend of mine recommends an Intel i5 750(OC'ed) as a processor, I'd like to have 6gb of ram as well.
Id also like a 1tb hard drive for files and an 80gb for OS and programs.

It would be great if someone who knew about computers could recommend me the remaining parts.
A list of parts from newegg.ca would be even better.

Dual monitors would be nice but are not necessary. an HDMI output would be nice so I can watch footage on my TV. Bluray drive is not necessary as I have a ps3.

My budget is around 1200(could go to 1500 for the right PC)excluding the monitor(s) and OS

this is the highest end one they have. they make some lower ones that arent as powerful. check the website for the differences

I would keep your computer even though it is falling apart and just wait t'ill you really need one. I edit my hv30 footage fine on 1 gb of ram and 1.8ghz duo core processor. I'm waiting to buy a new one when I go off to university plus in a year from now you will get more bang for your buck with computers.

and if he did get a MBP the 15" starts at $1800, the 13" model is not pro, its a macbook with backlit keys....

You don't need a boss computer to edit HDV footage fyi.

I know this setup is slightly over your budget, but as eheath said, you need a pretty boss computer for this stuff. I would say that this would be a really good setup for around your price range. Its powerful, as well as expandable so it will last you a while. You could change stuff around if you think you do or dont need certain things, but i would use this as a guideline. Actually, if i was looking for a computer in that price range, this would probably be what i would buy. Its worth the hundred or so clams over budget in my opinion.

I took a screen shot because its a lot to type. One thing to note, i put an Nvidia GTX 480 in there, a lot of people tend to recommend the ATI 5870s over those, but i just tend to prefer Nvidia products in general. Obviously this has been OCed and stuff by a third party, but its still an Nvidia card. Looking at it more closely now, though, i would say look into the 5870 series, generally a little cheaper for a very powerful card.

Sorry for the double post, but thats all from newegg.com. I also didnt see the 80gb hard drive thing in the OP, but you can figure it out. hope this helps.

Tripple post time. Critical error on my part. My bad. I still recommend that set up though. A boss computer will definitely help, and it would only make editing that much faster. Just my two cents.

Get a 64bit computer so u can run cs5, I just updated from cs3, that mercury engine is legit
