Another camera thread

So for the past year I've been wanting a cam used specifically for making edits aswell as short films. After recieving my last paycheck and doing a fair bit of research, I've decided now is the time to finally buy one. I've narrowed it down to two options: A traditional camcorder being the canon hf s200, or go with an HDSLR like the T2i. I initially was thinking the T2i because I also enjoy photography, but I'm not quite sure if I have the money or knowledge to get a setup that will function aswell a traditionaly cam. I know how to use DSLR don't get me wrong, Im just not quite sure what I specifically need. Currently my price range is anything less then $1000

My question is what will be a better purchase in the long run? Any other suggestions?

You wont be able buy a good setup for a t2i for under 1000 bucks.

I know this, but I'm thinking of putting money into it as I go. Although would like to know how much more  a decent setup would cost.

What you need depends on what you will be shooting.

Maybie start with a sound setup, and viewfinder. You will also need a couple of lenses.. The canon 50mm f1.8 is pretty much just plastic, but very sharp and cheap!

But start with some good sticks and a fluid head. I think manfrotto came out with one this year especially made for video dslrs.

that's what i've been doing. Its not that bad of an idea actually and I'm not sure why everyone gets their panties in a bunch about it. My next major investment will probably be upgrading my t2i to a 7d, everything is still compatible with one (minus a battery grip, batteries, and the recording medium), and there isn't any set back to doing that (that I can see, feel free to correct that though)

Yes thats what Ive been doing also.. I feel that you need to get used to your camera before deciding what kind of rig you want/need.


Hmm, why not wait for the canon 60d?

its actually a perfectly fine idea, thats what Ive been doing and its feels good to finally save up for something a add it to my setup

You guys missed the point. You NEED certain things from the start that cost more than what he has, he can buy a t2i with a kit lens for what 899? that leaves 100 bucks for his tripod, stabilization, memory, etc. 1000 bucks is not enough to create a good, working hddslr setup.

I was surprised when you guys ragged on him for this, I agree.

Maybe if you bought used you'd have a little more left over, but if you were dead set on the T2i you might as well just save your bucks a little longer till you can afford more of the necesities.

I wasnt dead set on the t2i, I got a nikon D5000 with the intention of photo > video, but I still am adding things to my kit like a glidecam
im a photographer first, not filmer

My setup is currently a t2i, a solid manfrotto tripod setup, plenty of memory, batteries, and a few nikkor lenses. It's definitely not complete, but it is certainly usable as I continue to buy parts for it.

For $1000 though? Not a chance.

I read the OPs post, and I said adding things along the way isnt so bad, and as AKrieg$ pointed out, thats the route hes taking too
as long as you have the basics then you can build on that with new things

However in the case of buying a DSLR for VIDEO, the OP would need: camera body, lenses, tripod, batteries, and any other accessories one needs to make a DSLR function well for video (I have no clue what else, but it seems like a lot). Heath is right, 100 after buying the camera isn't enough to get critical things.

A tripod shouldn't be something that gets added on - you might as well have it from the get go and wait to shoot your videos...that goes for a lot of the other accessories as well, I would assume.

I dont know anyone who gets a shitload of lenses at the start then is done, new lenses should always add to you kit, and OP can start with something basic like the 50mm 1.8
as far as the tripod goes, he can wait to save up another $100 to get a nice tripod
thats a pretty solid base to start shooting video with, of course his kit will grow over time, but thats not the end of the world
waiting to save up $4000+ to buy everything at once doesnt seem like a great plan to me...

Of course not - sounds shitty to me too. ...however its hard to start out with just 1000 when the camera you want is $899 - thats a given. There's just too many thing he needs, I think, just in general, to be able to shoot successful video with a DSLR.

Let me  clarify some things........ I'm not necessarily looking to use the setup right away, hence the "what is is better in the long run". Im not only putting in $1000 maybe $2000, I'm going to make some more money and spend more on this setup. My question is what would is a better buy for filming; an hdslr setup or a traditional camera.
