Laptop help

I have been looking for a laptop for a while because my desktop is very outdated....

I don't have to much cash to spend so please do not say "get a Mac!"

I have narrowed my choices down to the HP Pavilion series ,specificly this model:

it comes with 6gb of RAM but can be expanded to 8gb

it has two choices of graphic cards also

Choices:
512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5470 switchable graphics
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics

I don't know much about computers so thats why I have some questions for you NS computer nerds out there

1.How will this computer perform with editing software and HD footage?

2.Will this computer run videos smoothly ? because my current computer causes choppy footage

3.Is this a good buy or are there better deals out there?

Excellent. It's more powerful than most macs anyway.

Yes, pretty much every computer (besides netbooks) runs video smoothly


3.Is this a good buy or are there better deals out there?

I'd say so, you're getting more for your money than computers costing much more, and it's a better deal than a Mac.

get the backlit key option it comes in handy. also dont pay anything extra for a big harddrive externals are cheaper and back up your shit. i know nothing about amd processors so good luck with that

I have a pavilion dv7 and I love it except I can't friggin see the keys at night. I think mine is the 3065x model. Runs everything perfect and don't have any complaints so far. First laptop that I've owned that I can actually use as a desktop replacement.

Sarcasm definitely. But yes on most Pavilions backlits are necessary. 6GB ram should probably suffice for good video editing.
And it will definitely run your videos smoothly.
The only think I would recommend upgrading is the graphics card to the 5650

If you are gonna edit and watch video software, here is what i suggest, get the 5650 video card, that extra 1GB of RAM on the card will help run processes easier, also get the best processor, the AMD Phenom(TM) II Quad-Core Mobile Processor N930 (2.0GHz, 2MB L2 Cache). Both of these will help with video playback, and operations that your computer needs to perform. I would suggest also staying with 6GB, don't go 8GB.

get a refurbished mac still have the warranty and are cheap, get a mac, had mine for three years, works just a good as the day i got it, plus you don't have to pay for anti-virus that doesn't work

despite my original post I am seriously considering a mac now after playing around with the software at the apple store(I especially liked Imovie because it seemed very simple)

I still dont have to much cash to spend so I am not sure what to get

yo brent i have a mac and love it so im not saying that a mac isnt a good choice.. but imovie is not the reason to get a mac if your looking to get into editing haha.. although it is simple it is not on the same level as programs like final cut pro.. the reason imovie seems to simple is because it is so basic.. but if you can master more professional software then you wil make better edits

You can easily download free video editing software for a PC... HPs make good laptops... Sony Vaios are nice too if you have a bit more to spend.

answer: It will run better than any mac and if you get the 5650 not only will videos and editing software run smooth but you will be able to run any pc games you want on high graphic quality so yes get that and you will be set.

Well, generally, software is going to be a bit cheaper on PC's, and I find that you can get a lot more for your money with a PC. Try Toshiba, they make some powerful models in the satellite series, and they wont break the bank.

I am still not sure If I should go with the

macbook(standard 13' and 2gb or RAM) for $999

or 13' macbook pro with 4gb of RAM for $1,019

I would think it is worth the extra 20 dollars for a macbook pro with 4gb compared to the macbook...but on the other hand the macbook is brand new

or is there a catch I am not getting for buying the refurb?does it have less power or something? is it the new model?

please help I cant decide I need someone with a good knowledge on laptops

Get the Refurb MBP. It will be better - the difference between the macbook and macbook pro is inside it. Pro has more RAM, which is good, and you can expand it to even more.

If you're getting a macbook, though, get a 15 inch macbook pro.

The reason is that the 15 has two graphics cards- one built in for regular stuff, and one dedicated for high power stuff. You'll want the second graphics card, for which there is not enough space in either of the 13" macs you're considering.

In my opinion, it is worth it to cough up a little bit more cash for the 15 over the 13, and the operating system is absolutely worth the bump from PC to Mac.

Another thing that makes it worth it is the warranty- make sure you buy the extended warranty. It costs $350 for the 15 inch MBP, but it means that you get free phone support, and if your macbook has a problem, you can just take it to an Apple store anywhere in the world, and they'll fix it for free. Including parts and labor. That one lasts 3 years.

There have been a lot of laptop threads lately and there is always the mac/pc debate. People with PC's may look at stats, and see big numbers behind their pc and just think, why would i pay so much more for a mac when the stats arent as high?

The thing about macs is they just make so much sense, and are very practical. They run far more efficiently than a PC, they dont get viruses, once you lean the layout they are much easier to use than a pc. you never have to set up printers or any other accessory you plug into the computer unlike pc. I have never met anyone who has switched form a mac to a pc, and very few other laptops have as good battery life.

That is just touching the surface of Macs. if you are really interested go to a store and check one out. have someone walk you through the differences between a mac and a pc.

One last thing. If you do decide to get a pc, i have seen a lot of them go to shit really fast at college. The sony laptops blow. the dells blow. whatever you do DONT get one of these. IF you do go PC, i would recommend Toshiba or HP because from what i have seen they are the most reliable PC's

I just got a new Pavilion and it's the fucking bomb. I don't know how much they differ though. I play HL2 and Portal and they run smooth but I don't edit at all. the way macs are setup, in the OS and physically, piss me right off. one good example of that is using control for right click because Apple can't be bothered to put a second fucking button on the scrollpad. anyways, if you can deal with the little shit like the shitty right click and the FUCKING DOCK, and the OS in general, macs are great computers and can obviously handle HD editing and shit.

its not like that any more. now you tap the track pad with 2 fingers for right click. Scrolling up and down pages, you just drag 2 fingers down or up, its so much easier to use now

Trackpad / graphics report.

My Macbook Pro came in today (15 inch, 2.66ghz)

and the trackpad works well enough to play TF2 and keep a 1:1 k/d ratio using it. The computer runs the game at native resolution without any problems.

It's good stuff, though a lot more expensive than a PC with similar stats.

I went to the apple store today and played around with the 13" Macbook pro and it was awesome

refurb is $1020 and has 4gb of RAM

I am going to have to pay for it through a credit plan becuase I do not have the money and its really easy just slowly adding money as I get it month by month

Im sorry. Dell laptops are one of the better laptops out there. My family has a total of 5 Dell laptops and have never ran into trouble. Two of them totaling more than 6 years, and mine going into its third year. If you are not smart, yeah, laptops might not last long. Do some research to narrow it down then talk to a representative. I have nothing to say against Dell. Never had a single problem. Plus, with my service plan, if I EVER need ANYTHING, a Dell technician will arrive wherever I am THE NEXT DAY to repair my laptop. I love my dell. Don't listen to drumbumocdp. If you do your research a Dell will be absolutely awesome.

I am still on the fence between the macbook pro 13" vs. HP pavillion.....

1. the Hp has a core i5 processor but the macbook pro only has a core duo

2.the mac has better battery life,and overall look

3.Hp has a 14" screen but the mac has a 13.3"

4.the HP has a 500 gb memory but the mac only has a 250 gb

5.graphics are better on the HP

6.macbook has a better trackpad

7.i like mac os x better than windows 7

what should i do?

But seriously get a mac, I think hands down the MBP is the most well constructed laptop on the market. Having had mine for a year, I love it highly recommend to anyone else.
